Great list Wendy, can I add one?

0. Admit you do sometimes have negative thoughts

I have worked with this type of issue many times before, and find that you can't really start helping them until they admit their thoughts are sometimes negative. Some people just seem to adamantly believe that only bad things happen to them, when really most of the time it is just their perception.
