Case Study: The Case of Sal by Debbie Lane

Hypnosis Training, Misc

Recently a gentleman called my office sounding very distraught. Sal (his name for this article) had misplaced a large sum of money and could not remember where he had hidden it.

He normally stored some cash from him business in his home for easy access. He kept the money hidden away from inquiring minds. He had a routine way of retrieving the money, to avoid another finding it or his forgetting to put it away.

Then, the unthinkable happened. Sal went early one morning to get money to send an employee on an errand. No money. He checked again, the money and its container (a white sock), were both missing. Sal cleaned, checked, reorganized and agonized over the money, to no avail. What could have happened?

For three weeks he searched his home and his memory. Sal would get to a certain point in the routine and then his memory stopped. He kept hitting the same blank wall. That is when he decided to call my office. Hearing the desperation in his voice, I managed to make some schedule adjustments and set aside time for him the very next day.

Sal arrived half an hour early, started to fill out the paperwork and suddenly began to have a coughing fit. He left the office to run and purchase some cough drops. He returned to finish the paperwork in time. As I ushered him into my inner office, he appeared nervous. We sat and discussed what he was aware of and what he feared. He kept repeating that he couldn’t believe he was “that stupid”.

Once I began the induction into hypnosis, the coughing began again. I simply instructed him to allow the coughing to take him deeper as he expelled his fears. This seemed to work, he began to go very deep. Then he started twisting and turning. Apparently he had a cracked rib which was causing more and more discomfort. It took a while to allow him to relax and release that discomfort enough to go into trance.

As the session continued we began to regress backwards in time. I suggested that he start by going back just a day. No, his mind took him straight to the day he lost the money. He was able to hear conversations, see events unfolding, even smell the aromas of where he was. Suddenly, everything went blank and he began to weep. His rib began to ache as well.

He kept calling himself stupid. So, finally, I asked him why he was stupid. His response: “I left the money in the bathroom. I let her down.” I asked, “Who did you let down?” He wept a little more, and then he said, “My wife, she wasn’t supposed to know, it will break her heart.” I inquired,”What will break her heart?” “She wasn’t supposed to find out about her son. He smokes crack. He took the money. He used the bathroom after me,” answered Sal.

Interesting how the rib was hurting again. It seemed almost biblical in reference.

We worked on self forgiveness. He had not left the money on purpose. The son wasn’t around when he went into the bathroom. He was hurried that morning. Perhaps, however, now the son will get the help he needs and truly wants.

Sal left with a combination of emotions. Relieved to have figured out what had happened, sad at what had occurred. He had a heavy heart knowing what was ahead of him. He also hugged me and thanked me for helping him forgive himself. Now, he was ready for the journey to come.
