It’s nice to finally be back after a VERY long break. I’m sure some of you were wondering what happened to me. Well to make a long story short I was going through some personal issues with my family which required my attention. As much as I love blogging my family is the most important thing in the world to me and that will always come first. I do apologize to all my readers, but I hope you understand.

My life is still a little crazy at this point, but every day it’s getting better and better. I’m just taking things slow and day by day. In the meantime, I know many of you have been craving some articles so I reached out to my good friend and Persuasion Expert, Rintu Basu.
Leading People to Yes

As you sit there reading this article on Pacing and Leading Patterns you might have already noticed the hundreds of applications where you can use this to create fantastic results. In this article we will look at an extremely covert but very powerful hypnotic persuasion pattern. We will explore the benefits of using it, where it comes from and how you can use it to create some powerful results of your own.

Imagine a hypnotic language pattern that just takes your client from where they currently are and gently leads them to exactly where you want them to go in such a covert way that you only realise that you have got to your destination once you have arrived. How good an idea is that?

Now, some hypnotists see this as a great hypnosis tool to use with clients. Good hypnotists see this is a great tool to use both in and out of a therapy room. The best hypnotists have this so ingrained in their language that they can’t help themselves and are continually using these patterns to create compelling results.

Are You Sitting Comfortably?

As you read this article you might notice that I sometimes have a strange sentence structure. Sometimes this is because I write very colloquially from the UK, sometimes it is because I have an original approach to grammar and sometimes it is because I am delivering language patterns. I’ve already thrown a few at you, have you noticed?

You might have noticed several of the patterns the first time round and you may have caught a few more when you scan through again, certainly by the end of this article you will know how to use Pace and Lead Patterns to take anyone from where they are to where you want them to go. That would be the time to reread and notice the pattern.

Stepping Out of the Hypnotherapist’s Office

One pattern hypnotherapists use a lot, because it is extremely powerful is what I call a Pace and Lead Pattern. You may use them yourself. A typical phrase might be; “As you sit in the chair, with your eyes closed, you feel more relaxed.”

Notice how in that statement, assuming this is a hypnotherapy client situation, the first two statements, sitting in a chair with eyes closed are completely verifiably true and correct. The third statement cannot be externally verified by the hypnotherapist but the client is being led to making it true. The hypnotherapist makes two completely true statements and then suggests something that they would like to be true as if it is. This is what I call a Pace and Lead statement.

The reason this works so very powerfully is because you build rapport with statements that are true. Most people are socialised to like similarity and familiarity so by pointing these out it feels as if we are in agreement. The lead for the third part is the point where now there is a common bond you can take your subject to a new place. Obviously doing this in short steps and repeating the cycle is more covert than making one huge jump, but feel free to explore the differing effects of this pattern.

The structure of the pattern is simply making two completely true statements and then leading to a statement that you would like to be true. So now you have seen an example and discovered the foundation of the pattern you are ready to see some of the whole range of applications this has.

We Discussed Your Needs, Discovered All the Benefits and Can Now Move on to Discuss Payment

The best sales people are all hypnotists. A particular brand of pacing and leading patterns were translated into sales training and given the name of Yes Sets. Here the sales person would get the prospect by asking closed questions where the answer was yes. The sales person would then finish with the question they wanted a yes response for knowing that if the prospect has already answered yes several times they are likely to say yes again. Here is a typical sort of sale pitch as an example:

It was the green one you picked out wasn’t it?

Are you happy with my explanation of how to use it? (Obviously only if you know they already are.)

Do you want to pay the deposit now?

This is a simplistic example and having read it I expect you have got the idea of how you can expand the idea in different direction. Depending on the context you might just make statements; here is an example from a presenter to a group at the opening of a presentation:

You are sat in this room

Watching me speak about (X)

And that means you are ready to learn more about (X)

Or you might give your subject the illusion of choice by asking questions. For example here is a coach summarising a coaching session with a client:

We’ve sat and discussed your goals, are you happy with those goals?

Then we went through the next steps to accelerate your progress, can you see those steps clearly?

And finally we made sure you have the motivation and commitment to follow this through. Can you still imagine how great you will feel when you have achieved all of this?

Read, Understand and Apply Accelerated Learning and Hypnotic Language Patterns

Now that you have read this article and seen a few examples you will want to know how to apply this yourself. Let us discuss a process to allow you to integrate this pattern into your normal everyday language.

The first thing I would like you to do is scan through the article again and notice how many times I have cycled you through this pattern. You have probably caught me several times just as you were reading through but I bet I have slipped this pattern past you a couple more times than you were expecting. I think this is a good thing to do because it gives you more knowledge of the pattern, how it works and how easy it is to slip past people.

The next thing I would like you to do is start practicing this pattern in conversations where the outcome doesn’t matter. Many people have a problem remembering to use patterns when in the middle of a conversation. This is why I suggest you do things the other way round and start having conversations specifically to use patterns.

You can turn the whole thing into a game. I often, just for the practice go into a conversation just using pace and lead patterns. The idea is when it is your turn to speak you have to say two truisms before you make the point you want to make. For example if I am having a conversation and a friend asks me what I did last night I might respond with something like, “Sat in here talking to you about last night makes me think I should get out more all I did last night was watch TV. I’ve just admitted I need to get out more and told you all I did was watch TV so I guess you were doing something exciting. What were you doing last night?”

Notice how I cycled through pacing and leading statements twice, once to answer the question and once to ask the next question. You are possibly thinking that this this would be a stilted conversation, people might notice because it is a bit odd or that you might stumble over your words. The short answer is I completely agree and that is why you go out and practice with people that you are comfortable with and in conversations where the outcome doesn’t matter.

Here are a couple of other practice opportunities. Obviously the best way to get started is to have a study buddy so you can learn together. Another way might be just to pick people you are comfortable with, like a partner or family member and just practice with them. I know some coaches and therapists that will say to a client at the beginning or end of sessions that they are trying out a few language patterns and practice on them. But for me the best way to practice is to just deliberately go into a conversation with the express intention of continually using the pattern until they notice and scream at you to stop. In the NLP Techniques of my website you will find more articles about Hypnotic Language Patterns and how to practice them until you are completely proficient.

Finally once you are comfortable with making Pacing and Leading statements start practicing having a defined objective as the lead part of the statement. You will notice as you start to play with the concept that you will find yourself using this pattern more and more almost to the point where you are just doing it instinctively.

Okay, Now I’ve Seen It and Done It How do I Find Out More?

I was talking to a good friend and newly qualified hypnotist recently, and we were discussing the pros and cons of using scripts when working with clients. He confided that he really hates using scripts… but if he doesn’t use a script he doesn’t know what to say.

A lot of us feel awkward with a script in our hands. For a good hypnosis session to really flow, we don’t want to be speaking stiff, wooden lines, using words or patterns of speech that just don’t feel right coming out of our mouths. We want to speak naturally and fluently to the client, using our own, normal language patterns. But, especially if you’re a student, newly qualified or inexperienced hypnotist, dispensing with scripts can leave you floundering, lost for quite what you should be saying next. You can only get away with repeating, “relaxing more and more with every breath” so many times before you really have to come up with whatever the next part of the session is focusing on! If you find your clients frequently squinting quizzically at you when they were meant to be deeply relaxed, chances are you’re not quite ready to abandon the scripts yet!

So what’s the answer?

Well, in my opinion I’m afraid the answer is some hard work! The fact is that if you’re determined to work without scripts, you really have to know what you’re talking about. This means getting to know a set of core scripts for general use as well as you possibly can. I don’t mean memorizing them word for word… you’ll still end up sounding like a stilted automaton. I mean getting to know the meaning and the flow and flavor of them so well that you can confidently run through them in your own way, using words you feel comfortable and natural with, but confident that the structure and content are doing the job you want.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for being creative, coming up with original metaphors, and tailoring your sessions to suit your specific client. But you can only do this if you already have some core scripts to base your original ideas around. If you’ve learned your stuff well, you’ll know that gentle repetition is good; flowing connectives are good; using the present continuous tense is usually good too. If you know a good induction script, or one for general calmness, relaxation and confidence… really know it so that you can rephrase it to suit yourself… the creativity and freedom comes in when you’re doing the specific therapeutic work with your client. So you have them thoroughly relaxed and receptive, and then you use your imagination with whatever metaphors or visualizations you feel will work well for them and the particular situation they’re wanting your help with.

But I really don’t believe there’s a shortcut to working without scripts. If you want to feel natural and comfortable about what you’re saying in a hypnosis session, then you need to put the preparation time in. Practice reading aloud the scripts you like when there are no clients around. Gradually look at the page less and less, and exchange awkward phrases, or words you just wouldn’t use, with ones that feel more natural for you. Do this again and again until you’re completely relaxed about it. You know what you need to say, and you can adapt it to the situation.

Once you can run through a session without any trouble, you’ll find that you naturally begin to change and adapt and create sessions “on the hoof”. And when you’ve got that safe, stable, tried and tested core of “off the shelf” scripts well and truly locked in place, you’ll find that rather than being in a straight-jacket it gives you the freedom to be safely creative, to stumble upon those moments of magic where exactly the right words come to you… where exactly the right image or metaphor bubbles up out of your unconscious mind, and because you’ve already been speaking naturally and comfortably, you’re new idea just slots in perfectly.

And nothing is a substitute for experience. Put the hours in, practicing on family and friends if necessary, and you’ll soon find that you just naturally begin to know what to say to bring a client into deep relaxation. Your experience will teach you what works best for you and your clients, and you’ll find that you increasingly know what to say and how to say it, even in new, unfamiliar situations.

I know not everyone will agree with me about this. Some people only feel confident if they have a script in their hands, while others escape from the restrictions of scripts as quickly as possible and don’t want to base their work on what others have come up with. Most people go through a transitional stage, working with brief notes and bullet points to keep them on track before abandoning scripts altogether. And many very experienced hypnotists will still revert to using a script or at least some notes when they are dealing with an unfamiliar topic.

If you have an idea or a tip on how best to break free from using scripts without running into the, “ummm… what do I say now?” trap, please do share it below in the comments section. Everyone works slightly differently, and we can all benefit by hearing how others tackle the same problem.

It’s a controversial area of hypnosis, this idea of traveling back in our minds to previous lifetimes. I find it fascinating, yet I’m also something of a skeptic. There are those who swear by it and those who swear about it! Many people who are otherwise great proponents of hypnosis, will state that past life regression is utter nonsense, only practiced by quacks. On the other hand, there are undoubtedly many people who have used past life regression to successfully heal issues in their current lives.

So is it real? When you take a client back in time to visit previous incarnations, are they really remembering things from a past life? Is their imagination just making stuff up? And how much does it matter which is really the case?

I love thinking about this stuff and having discussions about it. You can usually get a really good debate going if you lob this into a conversation, although it can get a bit heated if you have people who feel really strongly one way or the other.

The evidence for past life regression is mainly anecdotal. The problem is that, in spite of what many people think, and some high profile (and what I consider rather dubious) cases of re-incarnated Cleopatra’s and Priests from the lost city of Atlantis, most clients in regression remember previous lives that are of very little significance to the time that they were set in. Very few people remember being well known figures of history. And of course the details of ordinary people are not well documented in the records of the time, making it difficult to confirm or refute the information that a client recalls in such a session. So we’re left to ponder over whether Mary the scullery maid in a fairly ordinary household somewhere in England ever really existed.

Also, in regression we rarely ask for or hear specific historical details. The purpose of regression is usually linked to current emotional and psychological issues the client is trying to resolve. So in fact it’s usually powerful emotions that people experience in these regressions, rather than detailed recollections that would be useful for verification purposes.

So perhaps our imagination just makes things up for us, when we go into past lives. Let’s say a client has an unexplained fear of water which they would like to overcome so they can enjoy boat trips with their family. In a past life regression, they “discover” that as a child in one of their previous lives they were playing on a river bank, tripped and slipped into the river. They couldn’t swim (as most people couldn’t in the past), and drowned. Often simply discovering the root cause of fear can diminish it dramatically. So the client leaves, feeling much more positive. They feel they now know where their fear comes from, so they naturally feel more in control of it. They know that so long as they learn to swim, there’s no longer any reason to be afraid of being in or on the water.

So does it matter whether their imagination pulled that “past life” out of nowhere, or whether that really is the root of their fear? Personally, I don’t think it does. Our unconscious minds are incredibly resourceful and creative and can help us to access our natural wisdom. So if that unconscious mind creates a metaphor, wrapping it up in a personal story from an imaginary past, who cares so long as it brings about healing and allows the individual to move forward in a positive way! And who are we to judge if the client involved is totally convinced that they have visited a real memory or not?

Perhaps one day we’ll know for certain whether past life memories are real or imagined. My own experiences of being regressed I found intriguing. It leaves me feeling open-mindedly sceptical if that’s not an oxy-moron! It also leaves me with mixed feelings if a client asks if I do past life regressions – am I being professional if I offer this service that many people find genuinely helpful, or am I colluding in promoting a delusional fantasy? Definitely food for thought.

I’d love to know what you, my readers, think on this controversial topic. So do please write in or use the comment box below.

Systematic desensitization… it’s long been used to help people overcome their fears and phobias. But what is it, and how does hypnosis make it more effective?

Most people who have developed a fear of something have had an initial traumatic experience that started it all off. But not everyone who has a traumatic experience develops a phobia about whatever was involved. Let’s take the example of bees. Person A is stung at the age of 6. It’s painful and unpleasant, but with the appropriate treatment the trauma is soon over, the pain fades. It’s explained that the bee was only trying to protect itself or its home; that it stung because it was frightened. Child A grows up not particularly enthralled with bees, but not particularly afraid of them.

In contrast, person B has never been stung. Several times in her childhood she sees her mother reacting in panic to the presence of bees. She doesn’t know until much later that her grandmother had a severe allergy to bee venom, which had left her mother with a deep-rooted fear of bees. Seeing her mother panic makes child B panic too, and she grows up with a real phobia of being anywhere near bees. It reaches the stage where she will barely go outdoors during the late spring and summer.

The problem is that the more the person avoids the thing they fear, the more firmly established the fear becomes. They are not getting the chance to overlay their fear with different memories or experiences. The only thing they associate with that object is fear. Systematic desensitization redresses the balance, by making the person gradually get closer to the thing they fear, so that they steadily build up a bank of experiences where they have allowed the object of their fears to come closer, with nothing bad happening.

Clearly this can take a long time, as they slowly and gradually try to increase their level of contact with the thing they fear.

So where does hypnosis come into it?

Well, for one thing, not all objects of fear are easy to come by. Nor are they necessarily predictable in their behaviour. If a psychotherapist specializes in helping people with phobias, where are they going to get the bees to help person 1, the spider(s) for person 2, the lightning storm for person 3, the clown mask for person 4, a variety of dogs for person 5…. You get the idea. And even if the therapist does somehow manage to source the necessary objects, how can they be sure that those things will behave in the way they need them to?

You’ve probably heard me say this many times before, but one of the greatest gifts to a hypnotist is the fact that the unconscious mind can’t tell the difference between a real experience and one we have vividly imagined. Suddenly systematic desensitization becomes something we can completely control. Through hypnosis, we can create a situation where the client comes into contact with the object of their fears in exactly the way they need to. We can ensure that the object of their fears behaves in exactly the way we need it to, so that they can overlay their fearful experiences with relaxed, confident and harmless ones. In imagination they can approach or experience the thing they fear, while maintaining a calm and relaxed state of mind. They don’t have to wait until they happen to encounter the thing they’re trying to overcome.

When I’ve used systematic desensitization through hypnosis with phobic clients, many of them have been extremely doubtful that it will help. After all, if you’re truly terrified of something it’s difficult to see how lying down, relaxing and imagining something can possibly make the slightest difference! However, without fail they’re amazed to find how real a well-constructed visualization feels. The success of the technique depends on getting lots of information about the way they usually feel and react when faced with the object they fear, and your ability to create really powerful visualizations (see my article on making visualizations more powerful for help with this).

The results can be astounding, and incredibly rewarding. And the great thing about using hypnosis is that it doesn’t matter how weird, wonderful, rare or expensive the thing they fear is – you can provide exactly what they need, whenever they need it!

If you’re interested in learning more about systematic desensitization, keep an eye out for a future article where I’ll look at just how we go about making it work.

With many types of hypnosis work, visualizations are a core aspect of what we hypnotherapists do. While you might occasionally get away with, “Imagine you’re in a beautiful place”, most clients will want a few more clues! So how can you make the visualizations you use more powerful?

How can you make it almost impossible for your client to resist the pull of the image you’re creating? You want them to become completely immersed in their inner world, so what can you do to make it as real for them as possible?

Some therapists make the mistake of trying to describe every little detail of whatever the client is meant to be experiencing in visualization. I say “make the mistake” because it’s an incredibly difficult thing to get every detail right for that particular client. Let’s take an example. Suppose I suggest to a client that as they’re walking along the sandy path through a meadow, they can hear the sound of running water in the distance. They follow the sound, and it brings them to a small river. They walk along the river bank for a few minutes, with the river on their right, enjoying the sound of the water and the warmth of the sun on their skin. After a short distance, they come to some stepping stones, that lead across to the other side of the river…

At this point, half of you might be thinking, “OK – what’s wrong with that?” because my description will have fitted accurately what you were imagining. But the other 50% of readers will have experienced at least one moment of difficulty within that simple paragraph. Firstly, as you imagined following the sound of water and stumbling upon the little river, what if in your mind at that point the river was on your left? The next thing you’re told is that the river’s on your right. It can jar and irritate that you’re being told something that doesn’t match with what you’ve already imagined. The second point of difficulty… what if in your mind there were shady trees lining the riverbank? But the therapist tells you that you can feel the warmth of the sun on your skin.

Now in reality, if you have a good relationship with the client, and they trust you, and they’re willingly trying to make the hypnosis work well, they’ll probably just do a mental shrug and think, “Oh, ok, so the river’s actually on my right…” and carry on. But it’s not ideal, and for clients who find it difficult to visualize clearly, it makes it even more difficult. Also, if we can easily find two jarring moments in a short paragraph like this, just think how many there might be in a whole visualization, especially if you’re trying to be really detailed. One or two you might get away with, but the more often it happens, the less deeply your client will be able to immerse themselves in the visualization.

So, without going into huge detail, how can you make your visualizations as powerful as possible for the client? Here are a few key pointers to help you:

Allow the client to picture everything for themselves, by being non-directive. Rather than telling them, “the beautiful staircase is made out of intricate, wrought iron, with delicate carvings of plants woven throughout the balustrade”, you can direct them to notice the details for themselves: “As you get closer to the bottom of the staircase, take a moment to look carefully at it. Notice what materials have been used to construct this staircase. Is it intricate or plain? Does it have open sides, or is there a banister or balustrade of some kind?” This way, whatever the client imagines remains “right” and can’t be jarred by your suggestions of something that doesn’t fit with what they’ve already pictured. You’re helping them to build up a detailed image of their inner world, and you’re giving them the key components that are necessary for whatever intervention you are using, but you’re not telling them exactly what it should look like. Later, an analysis of what they created can lead to interesting insights as to the symbolic nature of the different objects in their inner world. This wouldn’t be relevant if you told them exactly what to picture. This technique is particularly important and effective if you’re asking them to visualize an event or experience that they’re preparing for or dealing with. Only they will know what the relevant details really are

If your client prefers a more directive, authoritarian approach, be really careful about the order of the descriptions you give. If we take the original example about the river, you can circumvent trouble by stating where something is, or is coming from, before saying what it is, so it arrives, fully formed and in the right place in the client’s inner world. So if the river being on the right, and the sunshine were both in some way important, our example might look more like this:

As you walk along that sandy path through the meadow, some distance away to your right you can hear the inviting sound of running water. You follow that sound, and soon you discover a small river running through the open, sunny meadow. Notice how the sunlight dances on the water. Turn so that the water is on your right, and walk along the river bank for a few minutes, enjoying the sound of the bubbling water and the warmth of the sun on your skin. After a while, you notice some stepping stones that lead across to the other side of the river…

Can you see how there’s far less margin for error here than in the original version? It takes a bit of thought and care, but is far less likely to cause the client irritation, or get in the way of their becoming fully immersed in the image.

Use all of the senses. This is critical for really immersive visualization. Not everyone is particularly visual. In fact some people find it really difficult to conjure up a strong, visual image. But if you involve all of the senses, then it doesn’t matter whether you have a predominantly aural, visual or kinaesthetic client, you will have satisfied their needs, and you will be giving them the information or prompts they require so they can imagine the details vividly in their own way. So as well as talking about what they can see, get them thinking about what they can smell (the warm damp earth? The heady scent of flowers?), what they can taste (the salt of the sea on the air?), what they can hear (the singing of birds? The light bubbling of a stream? The hum of insects on a summers day?) and feel (the polished smoothness of a marble floor? The dry, powdery sand running through their fingers? The cool breeze against their skin?).

By including all the senses, you make it difficult for your client not to let themselves drift deeply into the place you’re creating with them.

Give them time to explore for themselves. Once you’ve established the “place” that the client is visiting in visualization, giving them a few moments simply to explore and discover this place will help them to sink even deeper into the “reality” of the visualization.

Ask them what worked. Feedback is such a useful tool. If you plan to re-use the same or similar visualization with the client, ask them what worked well, and whether anything got in the way. If it’s appropriate, ask them to describe some of the details they noticed within the visualization. You can mention one or two of these the next time, knowing that they will be consistent with the client’s image of this “place” or experience.

So there you have it. In short:

Let them picture everything for themselves

Be careful about the order you say things in – give locations and directions before giving detailed descriptions

USE ALL FIVE SENSES (if you do nothing else, do this!)

Give the client some time to explore their inner world for themselves

Get feedback. Find out what worked for them, and use it again next time!

A few weeks ago I ask everyone on my mailing list what they wanted to learn about and I got a overwhelming response. The topics ranged from Conversational Hypnosis, Suggestion Formation and even how to build rapport, but the number one topic people wanted me to blog more about was the Infamous Rapid and Instant Hypnosis Induction.

It’s didn’t really surprise me as Rapid and Instant Inductions are one of the most powerful tools a Hypnotist can know. They look cool, work fast and get your clients to the necessary level we want to work with them at which is Somnambulism. Since this is one of the most requested topics I plan on doing a series of post on these types of hypnosis inductions. I’ve already began working on a couple, but I’m currently working on a few projects outside of the hypnosis business which are eating up all my time.

Click Here To Watch The Physiology Behind Instant Inductions Video

So in the meantime while I’m working to clear up my schedule I thought I would post a really amazing video from my friend and fellow Hypnotist, Taylor Sherman. A few years ago Taylor and I released a Instant and Rapid Induction Home Study Course called Tranced Out. We only offered Tranced Out for a limited time for a number of reasons and within one week we completely sold out. I’m pretty sure most of you remember when Taylor and I did the launch for Tranced Out because we posted some really great content.

One of the pieces of content we posted on the Product Launch Blog for Tranced Out was an amazing video by Taylor where he breaks down the The Physiology Behind Instant Inductions.

Click Here Or The Image of The Video To View The Real Video

If you ever wondered why the rapid or instant Hypnosis Induction works the way they work then this post is for you. Now I’m aware some of you may have seen this video, but over the years I’ve got a lot more readers who haven’t seen the video. I think this video could be helpful for those and even those who may have seen it a while back, but have forgotten for whatever reason.

I’ve got to run, but I’ll be back soon with a number of new post and material. Just bear with me as I get caught up with work. Oh, before I go please make sure you check out Taylor’s official hypnosis website below.

Washington DC Hypnosis

If you’re truly serious about learning to master these Instant and Rapid Inductions I highly recommend you seek out either a live training event or a well produced Training DVD. It is possible to learn these techniques without formal training, but you will save yourself a lot of time and trouble by going the route I recommend.

Out of all the training DVDs I have the best by far is Sean Michael Andrews Instant and Rapid Induction Second Edition DVD Set. I personally own this and have learn a lot from it. Sean is a good friend, but also an amazing teacher. So if you do decide to go the formal training route you won’t go wrong with this investment. All you have to do is click the link below to be taken to Sean official website for this training product.

Note: The following link is an affiliate link and if you do decide to make an investment in your training you will be supporting Whats On My Brain and you have my sincere thanks. As always I like to be upfront with everything I do as I truly believe you all deserve it.

I just love doing Inner Child Work, both with clients and on myself. It’s fascinating and amazingly effective. In my last article, we looked briefly at the concept of the inner child, and today I want to give you an idea of the work we hypnotists can do to resolve some of the issues and problems that can stem from the “wounded child” that we all carry around inside of us. As always, a little article like this just can’t do justice to the subject, but I hope I can give you enough of an insight into it to make you want to find out more!

The whole idea of inner child work is to heal the wounded inner child that feels they weren’t loved enough. At the same time, we want to encourage and release the positive aspects of the child – spontaneity, and a sense of fun and wonder that helps us to love life and grab opportunities that come our way. Other forms of therapy successfully carry out inner child work, but it can take a lot of time and discussion, and digging around in the past, working through issues from early childhood. Hypnosis on the other hand, is a fantastic tool that can shortcut the whole process, bringing about dramatic change in just one or two sessions.

So what do we do?

We make use of a combination of visualization and memory. Having induced an hypnotic state, the idea is to go back in trance to when we were about 5 years old. This is roughly the time when most of us come to the realization that the world doesn’t revolve around us. The unconscious mind will know what point to lock onto, so there’s no need to pinpoint exactly what age the client should be homing in on.

In most cases I like to take the client back to the home they lived in at that time. They’re asked to imagine they’re standing in the street outside, looking at their old home. As always, engaging all the senses in the visualization helps to make it very real and effective. So taking a little time to establish what they can see, hear, feel will reap rewards and often helps to deepen the level of trance.

The next part of the session will look something like this:

In a moment I’ll ask you to make your way to the front door of the house, noticing all sorts of details as you approach it. You’ll find that the door is unlocked, and you’ll go into the house and make your way through the rooms. Somewhere, you’ll come across your inner child, the “you” from that time.

You might find your child right away, or it might take some time to discover where they are. They might be right there waiting for you when you enter, or they might be hiding themselves away. While you’re looking for them you may notice significant details about the house that have meaning for you. Note these details so you can remember and think about them later.

When you find your child, just raise the finger on your right hand as we discussed, to signal that you’re with them.

So now, walk up to that door and enter the house…

People usually find it fascinating when they do this exercise, because they often recall small details about their early home that they had completely forgotten about. Even if they’re still living in the same house, things change over the years, and they’ll frequently remember little ways in which the house was different back then, whether it’s the detail of a particular wall paper, or the lay out of furniture, or a picture that no longer hangs on the wall.

The idea now, having found that wounded child (they’re often sad and quiet in this first visualized “meeting”, or sullen and angry) is to reassure them that this adult version of themselves has come back to take care of them, to love them and comfort them, to cherish them and give them whatever is missing in their life. You’re basically offering that wounded child exactly what they’re been looking for all these years – the pure, indulgent, unquestioning and unconditional love that couldn’t be theirs in the real world. But we can give this to the inner child because in our inner world we can visualize whatever we need.

If they were desperate for a puppy or a new bike, we can give it to them. If they wanted a room of their own to get away from the mad crush and noise of siblings, or a visit to a theme park we can create that for them. In fact, it’s usual to give the child a gift of some kind. Sometimes people have a clear idea before hand of what they’re going to give the child, but often it’s a spur of the moment decision, or something just “appears” in the visualization which may surprise the client but will be entirely appropriate when they think about it later.

A little time is given to let the client ask whatever questions they want to ask of the child, or vice versa, and for them to discuss whatever they need to discuss, before the client holds the child close and reminds them that they are always a part of them, carried inside them forever, and that they’ll always be loved and cared for. Then it’s time to leave.

We can teach the client how to easily “revisit” the child regularly in just a few minutes a week, or on an ad hoc basis.

What we really do in inner child work is “re-parent” the wounded child. That child sub-personality has been stuck, locked in an unhappy struggle to change the way things were, to re-play history until he or she gets what they wanted or needed. By giving them what they want and need in fantasy (and remember, the unconscious mind can’t distinguish between reality and something we vividly imagine), we can release the old, destructive patterns and insecurities, and move forward in a way that’s positive and appropriate to the adults we have now become.

One caveat I need to add before finishing today. This is a very quick, rough and ready look at the basics of inner child work. What I’ve written above probably sounds warm and fuzzy and kinda sweet… the reality is that if there’s been abuse and trauma in early childhood, this first “visit” to the world of the inner child can be disturbing and distressing. The child may want to have nothing to do with the adult, or the adult may find their inner child repulsive, disgusting or pathetic.

In cases like this, I’ll often set up the “meeting” with the inner child to take place on neutral ground – perhaps a beautiful garden, rather than in the home where the trauma or abuse was experienced. We can get there if it seems necessary in later sessions. In these cases, you may have to work over a longer period and with more “visits”, but the rewards will be even more profound and satisfying.

In short, everyone can benefit from paying some attention to that inner child. I urge you to look into this area in more depth. Both you and your future clients will be glad you did!

It’s also a concept that clinical hypnotists frequently work with, as it fits so well with hypnotism.

As a practicing hypnotist, you would be expected to be able to offer inner child work where appropriate, so let’s take a brief look at what or who the inner child is, and its relevance to clinical hypnosis.

First of all, I want to be clear that not everyone subscribes to the idea of the Inner child, and inner child work, although very popular and generally accepted in psychological circles definitely has its critics. But then so does hypnosis in general! For the purpose of writing this article it’ll make life much easier if I don’t have to keep saying things like, “Proponents of Inner Child work believe…” As it happens, I’ve had a lot of success with inner child work, and I love using it with clients, so I guess I’m pretty much a convert. Besides, if it gets results, why knock it?!

Maybe in another article I’ll look at the criticisms of inner child work (it’s useful to know what they are, if for no other reason than to be prepared for those who will say it’s all rubbish) but for now, I simply want to give a brief over view of the concept.

Where Does Inner Child Work Come From?

Inner Child work has different guises in many different branches of psychology, including Transactional Analysis, Gestalt therapy, psycho-analysis, psycho-synthesis and clinical hypnosis, but they all, in their own way, say the same thing… that we have many different selves within us; different sub-personalities, many of which have their roots in a developmental stage from our past. And at any one time, the way we behave, feel and react to life is dictated by which of those sub-personalities is in control.

This isn’t a form of neurosis or psychosis, it’s perfectly normal! And when the positive aspects of those sub-personalities are freed up it can even be very healthy! Each of these sub-personalities has its own beliefs, attitudes and, most importantly, hidden agendas. For many of us, particularly when pressure mounts, it’s our child-self which comes to the fore, and that’s not always the best person to be in charge! We all recognize that feeling of insecurity, don’t we, where underneath the brave front we feel like five year old just waiting for our cover to be blown?

We’re Children For Life

We’re all born with a natural tendency to be open, inquisitive, playful and full of wonder. Some people say this is naturally how we are, our “true self”. This child-personality remains a part of our psyche for life, and has some very positive characteristics which emerge in a sense of fun, creativity and spontaneity, if we allow it to.

However, our early childhood experiences have a major impact upon us. By the age of 5 or 6, this “divine child” as Jung referred to it has been replaced by the “wounded child”. This is when we realize to our horror that the universe does not revolve around us. That it’s not enough to simply be ourselves. To be loved by our parents we have to conform, be “good” (or quiet, or aggressive – whatever our particular family dynamic emphasizes).

So no matter how good, kind, loving and supportive our parents were, as far as our “child” is concerned, we clearly were not loved enough. And of course, if our parents were abusive or neglectful, then the damage goes much deeper.

It is this “wounded child”, unconsciously carried around with us, angry, confused, frightened, insecure and manipulative, that is seen as the source of many of our difficulties as adults. That wounded child is frozen in time, influencing our behavior and decisions as it tries to re-write history and secure the unconditional love and approval it desperately wants. Until we deal with the unresolved issues of early childhood, and satisfy the needs of our child-self, it’s difficult to move forward as healthy, balanced, mature adults.

The Inner Child Part 2 Is Coming Soon

Psychotherapy, psychoanalysis and counseling all tend to spend a great deal of time rooting around in childhood memories, working and re-working the issues. They certainly have their place, and can be very valuable. But one of the joys of being a hypnotist is that we can work directly with the unconscious mind, where these different sub-personalities “live”. We can quickly and effectively work with this wounded child to bring about rapid, life-changing results.

Just how we go about working with the Inner Child in hypnosis will be the subject of my next article, so I hope you’ll come back to take a look.

It’s generally seen as good practice to add a 20 minute slot to the appointment when someone is coming to see you for the first time, so you can carry out a pre-hypnosis interview. I’m not talking about the pre-talk, here, although you may end up incorporating that into the pre hypnosis interview too if all goes well. What I’m talking about is the first time you and your client meet, ready for their first hypnosis session with you.

“But Josh,” I hear you say (well, you might not be saying it, but humor me please!). “What about street hypnotists and stage hypnotists? They don’t carry out a whole interview with people before hypnotizing them, and that seems to work just fine for them. Why should we bother?”

OK, you’ve got a point I suppose, and the fact is that nine times out of ten you might get by without the pre-hypnosis interview. But what I’d ask is, do you really want to use hypnosis to help people? Do you really want to maximize your (and their) chances of success? Do you want to go into your hypnosis session with them, confident that you’ve got a plan that will get the very best out of the session for both of you?

I’m hoping your answer would be, “Yes Josh” on all counts. In which case, I’d really urge you to take the pre-hypnosis interview seriously. Let’s look at 10 reasons why it’s a good idea:

It gives a professional image. It makes it clear you’re viewing the client as a unique individual, rather than just the next person on the conveyor belt, and this will increase their confidence in you.

You can get a clear picture of any previous experiences they’ve had with other hypnotists (clinical or otherwise) and ensures you can utilize anything that’s been particularly effective for them in the past, and avoid anything that’s been irritating, uncomfortable or ineffective.

You can use the interview to check for any underlying medical issues they might have. This can be useful in ensuring you don’t do anything to aggravate an existing complaint, and also gives you the opportunity to suggest they seek medical attention (e.g. when someone wants you to help them with chronic pain, but they haven’t seen a physician to get the underlying cause of the pain diagnosed).

It’s during the pre-hypnosis interview that you would check you’ve got the right contact information for them (useful for follow ups), including next of kin. I know, I know! It’s really unlikely to happen, but they might just decide to collapse with a heart attack as they’re leaving your practice. Now ok, we all know that calling for an ambulance is a good move at this point, but your client would likely prefer to have somebody they know with them or meeting them at the hospital, and when they’re lying unconscious on the floor it’s a bit late to be asking them who they want you to call and what the number is!

It’s useful to check for phobias or even things they just don’t like very much – water, elevators, boats, particular animals, their parents (!). You can be sure to avoid these things in any visualization you decide to use.

It gives both of you a little time to calm nerves and establish a rapport. Especially if you’re just starting out, you might find you’re just as nervous as your clients on those first meetings! Having a structure to discuss some practical things pleasantly before getting down to business helps break the ice and lets you both relax.

It allows you to discuss exactly what your client’s hoping to achieve, which helps you really tailor your session for them, and also lets you do a reality check if necessary.

I’m not saying you should, but some hypnotists offer to carry out an initial interview for free. This allows you, amongst other things, to assess the client and decide whether you’re happy to work with them. It gives the client the opportunity to decide, without having parted with any cash, that perhaps this isn’t right for them right now… or if they just don’t like the look of you, they have an opportunity to say, “I don’t think I’ll bother thanks very much!” It’s only 20 minutes of your time. You’ll almost certainly be fine working with virtually any one who comes to see you, but it’s good to have a “get out” clause with no commitment from either side and no offense given or taken.

A very boring but important reason for carrying out an initial pre-hypnosis interview is to make sure you cover yourself in the highly unlikely event of anything going wrong. It may be unlikely, but it has been known for people to have heart attacks, strokes, even diabetic seizures while in hypnosis, albeit completely unrelated to the hypnosis. I’m assuming you’ve got professional indemnity insurance if you’ve actually set yourself up in practice. So if somebody decided to investigate the circumstances, with a view to suing you, your notes from the initial interview would show that you gathered all relevant information from your client, and took all reasonable precautions before deciding on your therapeutic interventions. Your insurers will like you!

A good pre-hypnosis interview will give you lots of material you can use in the following session (and future ones if the client’s seeing you about longer term issues). Whether it’s details about their current smoking habits, or leisure pursuits they’re passionate about and wish they had more time for, or their relationship with their teenage son, it’s all useful stuff you can tune into and utilize.

So please, get a good format worked out for a useful pre-hypnosis interview that works for you, and make the most of this important useful tool with all your new clients. If you would like more hypnosis training articles like this one just let me know.

What’s the point of a Hypnosis Pre-talk?

The pre-talk in hypnosis is pretty much the most important part of dealing with any client. If you don’t do a good pre-talk (please don’t tell me you don’t do one at all!), you’re really jeopardising your chances of success. And don’t forget, it’s not just your own success as a hypnotist that’s affected; you’d be letting down every client that walks out of your practice having had a less than excellent experience. And let’s really put the pressure on and point out that they may just decide that hypnosis clearly doesn’t work, and turn their back on this fantastic therapeutic tool forever!

One of the biggest mistakes a hypnotist can make is to assume that the client knows and understands more about hypnosis than they actually do. And that’s what the pre-talk’s all about – educating the client about hypnosis, making sure they know what to expect, and dealing with fears and misconceptions. It allows the subject to ask any questions they may have, and let’s you begin building the rapport that’s so important between hypnotist and client.

That’s all very well, you might be thinking, but I’ve only got an hour available for a session, surely we should be getting down to the actual hypnosis as quickly as possible?

Well, there’s three points I want to make there. One is that your session will be a waste of time if you’re client’s scared of being hypnotised and you’ve not dealt with their fears. Secondly, you only need a pre-talk before the first session. After a successful first session, your client will return for session two primed and ready to go straight into trance for you. And finally, a good pre-talk isn’t necessarily a long pre-talk, so you don’t have to sacrifice much of that first session for the unparalleled rewards of a well-prepared client!

So what are the ingredients of a good pre-talk?

There are different ways of approaching the pre-talk, but they all deal with the same things. Fears, misconceptions and expectations. Don’t wait for your client to tell you what they’re expecting – they might not even know that they have certain apprehensions. If they’ve based their understanding on stage hypnosis acts, it might help to explain that stage hypnotists almost always go through a screening process, so that the members of the audience that end up on stage with them have already shown themselves to be suggestible, and willing and happy participants.

Talk to them in general terms about the most common fears and misconceptions that people have about hypnosis, for example:

Being under someone else’s control

Not remembering anything

Being forced to do something against their will

Revealing something they don’t want to reveal

That hypnosis is a form of sleep

Getting “stuck” – not being able to

A fear that they can’t be hypnotized

You can explain the following, either briefly or in as much depth as you think the client needs:

being in trance is a natural thing that everybody does. Hypnosis simply brings it about deliberately.

Explain what hypnosis feels like; the fact that they will still be able to hear the normal every day sounds that are going on around them, but won’t be at all bothered by them. They’ll just be more focussed on your voice, or whatever they’re thinking about in hypnosis at the time.

They’ll remain alert and awake, but deeply relaxed, and this special state of awareness is what lets us speak directly to their unconscious mind.

Different people do respond slightly differently, with some people going much deeper than others, but everyone is able to go deeply enough into trance to be able to benefit from hypnotic work.

They’ll be able to come out of trance immediately if they want or need to, and they’ll be in total control throughout the session. They’ll only take on board suggestions that appeal to them, that they see as beneficial to them, and they will only reveal or talk about things that they choose to.

While the experience is very enjoyable and relaxing, and they might feel a reluctance to leave behind the warm, comfortable, relaxed state they’ve been in, it will be easy and natural for them to come out of trance gently when the session is over.

The only thing which would prevent them from being able to be hypnotised is if they really don’t want to be. So long as they want to be hypnotised and want to use this amazing tool to help them create a better life for themselves, then they’ll do absolutely fine.

You don’t even have to do the pre-talk yourself. Loads of hypnotists give their clients an explanatory leaflet to read beforehand, or a DVD to watch before the session begins. It’s a really effective way of covering the pre-talk comprehensively.

You can then ask if they’ve got any further questions or worries and address these, before asking if they’re happy to proceed. This is like asking their permission to hypnotise them, which gives them confidence that it really is down to them. Most people will agree at this point, and you then have a willing and well prepared subject who knows what to expect and can relax and enjoy the wonderful experience that a hypnosis session is!

So please, to give yourself and your client the very best possible chance of success, remember to always create the solid foundation that a good pre-talk gives you. It may take a bit of time at the beginning, but it’ll speed up all your future dealings with that client, and give them huge confidence in you.

As many of you know last Thursday I had my first in a series of teleseminars with award winning hypnotist and marketing expert John Weir. I was really looking forward to hosting the event as I’ve been waiting to do more of these type of events for my readers. I must admit it feels nice to change the way I connect with my readers. I’m so used to writing that I forget there are other ways for me to reach out to all of you.

>> Click Here To Download The First Teleseminar Call with John Weir <<

I was a little nervous because as I just mentioned I don’t do this type of thing much so I had to step out of my comfort zone, but in the end I can only get better right? I want to thank everyone that turned out for the call. It really means a lot to John and me.

So How Did The Call Go?

For the most part the call went really good. The call was supposed to only last an hour, but we ended up going for an hour and a half. We did have some audio problems during the first half of the call which was beyond our control, but the problem correctly it’s self and the second half of the call went pretty smooth I must say.

We had a great turnout with some really big names in hypnosis on the call. My good friends Larry Elman (son of Dave Elman) and his wife Cheryl Elman were both on the call. Honestly I was only expecting my readers and some of John’s, but it was a great turn out.

Beside the noise during the first half John introduced himself and gave background on his experiences, his vision for our profession and why he created the Hypnosis Business Coaching Home Study Course. As I explained before the first call was going to be more of an introduction and a inside look into how his program can help hypnotists to grow their business.

This wasn’t a pitch fest by any means, but the calls were born from helping people to understand the new program from John Weir. Once we finished the introduction we got into the real meat of the Teleseminar calls which is answering questions from John and once in a while myself.

Since time for the call was limited we could only take a few email questions, but the ones we got were really good and John provided some serious value to everyone on the call. John told listeners how to book more clients, how to build websites for free, the difference between branding and marketing and a lot more.

>> Click Here To Download The First Teleseminar Call with John Weir <<

John Weir Answered Questioned From The Audience

After we answered some readers emails ( please submit your questions to us. Anything you want to know about building and marketing your practice and well answer it live on the call.) we moved on to questions from the people on the call. We were hoping for some questions from people, but for some reason people tend to be shy about speaking up on the call. John as well as I have experienced this before with coaching programs we have put on.

Just remember that we are doing this for you. How many times in life will you get to ask two Hypnotists who are experts at building a business and marketing anything you want to know to help you promote and market your business and practice? So don’t be shy…we don’t bite!

Only after the call ended did we find out that a few people did attempt to speak up and ask some questions, but for whatever reason they had some problems with their voice coming through. This is to be expected as technology isn’t perfect and stuff happens. I wanted to use another word for stuff, but you get the idea.

Listen To The Replay Now

Long story short the call when great and John even offered everyone on the call a special discount for his new program. This was a special only for people on the call. Either way, I have posted a link to the first teleseminar call below so you listen to it at your convience.

Please keep in mind that the first call was more of an introduction and the rest of the calls will pretty much be all Q and A’s, but John did deliver some really good information in the first call.

Please Send In Your Questions

Please join us if possible and if you can’t make it please send us your questions by posting them in the comment area below. We’ll make sure to answer them live on the call.Don’t be shy and there is no such thing as a stupid question. John and I are doing these calls because we want to educate Hypnotists on the subject.

All you have to do is submit the question below in the comment box under this post. You can also e-mail me or John directly or reach out to us on our facebook pages which I’ve listed below. However you want to ask us the questions is fine. If you plan to be on the call you are free to ask us live, but if you are a little shy or won’t make it, but still want to get your question answered then just post it below. Feel free to submit as many as you like as we’ll have a whole hour and maybe a little longer to answer them all. I’ll make sure we read it on the call!

Details For The Second Teleseminar Call

The first call was pretty much an introduction to us, John’s vision for our profession and why he created his Hypnosis Business Coaching Home Study Course. Since we included some information about John’s past and background we weren’t able to answer as many questions as we like, but this won’t be the problem with the second call.

In the upcoming call which will be held on Thursday June 9th at 7pm Eastern time John and I will both be answering nothing but questions for pretty much the whole hour long call. So the next call is going to be filled with value. We aren’t going to be doing this forever so please make sure you do your best to attend or at least make sure to download the free replays of the event. Here are the details of the next call

The Second Teleseminar with John Weir Details:

Well I got to run, but in the meantime don’t forget to listen to the free reply and submit your questions to us in the comment area below. Anything you want to know about building/marketing your hypnosis business or practice. Between the two of us John and I can answer pretty much anything related to running a successful business.

The Second Teleseminar Will Be June 9th at 7 PM – Read Below For Full Details

Over the last few weeks I’ve been working closely with my good friend and amazing Hypnotist, John Weir to help him promote his brand new Hypnosis Business Coaching Home Study Course. I usually don’t promote this hard, but it’s a product I truly believe in and think it could change the future of the hypnosis profession.

It’s more then a product I’m promoting for a friend. It’s a vision for the future. John and me both believe that we need more full time, successful hypnotists in our profession and this program is the key to opening that door.

Details To Join The Call Are Below..Keep Reading

Full Time Instead of Part Time

While our profession does have a number of successful, full time Hypnotists the majority are still part time or just doing it as an hobby. The biggest compliant is that they aren’t making enough money and the simple truth is there is no reason you shouldn’t be making a high 5 or 6 figure income. I honestly believe that it’s a lack of knowledge on how to get started and where to go.

Hypnosis trainers teach the latest techniques, but rarely teach you how to get people into your office so you can use those techniques. This is a huge problem and one John Weir along with his business partner, Bob Bicknell are trying to solve.

Since I’ve started to promote the Hypnosis Business Coaching Home Study Course I’ve gotten a lot of wonderful feedback. A lot of hypnotists have come aboard and have started to help me spread the word to everyone they know about this new program. It’s critically that Hypnotists understand that you have to wear two hats to be successful in the hypnosis business. You must wear the hat of the Hypnotist, but you must also wear the hat of marketer, entrepreneur & businessman/businesswomen.

Join John Weir and Myself For A One Hour Free Teleseminar

Since the start of this promotion I’ve been receiving a lot of questions about the program. So many that John and I have decided to put on a FREE Teleseminar to answer these questions, explain the vision, answer questions from YOU and just provide a lot of great value. We also want to use this a time for you to get to know John a little bit better. For the most part, most of my readers only know John from his many written guest post on this blog. This will allow you to interact with John on a different level and know him on the same level I know him.

He’s a great guy with a lot of passion and a desire to truly help our profession. Once you hear him speak you’ll see why I look up to John and believe so much in his vision.

Not Another Pitch Fest?

Now I’m sure some of you may be thinking this will be some pitch fest since most teleseminars are, but I can promise you that won’t be the case. We will talk about John’s Hypnosis Business Coaching Home Study Course, but we’ll also go into a lot more subjects as well such as how John got started, the top 3 things you can do to become successful, the importance of developing your business mind, how to make money in this profession and a lot more.

In addition, John and I will both be answering your questions live on the call. If you have anything you want to know about building/marketing your practice or business this would be the perfect time to ask.

While we do want to really help you to understand what the program is all about we also want to provide you some amazing value that you can put to work in your business right away. So make sure you bring a pencil and a notepad cause we’ll going to be giving away a lot of great stuff.

How Long Will The Call Be?

We know that you have lives and other things going on so the call will only be about an hour long. It may go over a few minutes, but plan to be on the call for about an hour.

What If I Can’t Make The Call?

Obviously we want you to make the live call as the more people on the call the more fun in my opinion, but we know you may have important life events going on. If this is the case we are planning to record the call and release it later, but we can’t promise anything. The reason why is sometimes the system doesn’t record the calls or errors happen during the recording process. Were not saying it will and everything should be fine, but this is why we highly recommend you join us live if possible. This will also allow you to personally speak with John and me and ask us your questions.

An Hour Seems Short To Cover A Topic As Big As Marketing/Building Your Business?

An hour does goes by pretty fast so that’s why we are doing a small series of teleseminars for you. This is just the first one in a series of teleseminars John and I will be putting on for you. The first one will be sort of an introduction and following calls will go into even more details and provide even more value. John and I both want you to succeed and it’s not all about the money. This is why we are doing multiple calls because we want to share a lot of great information with you that you can put to work in your business. So please join us and help us make John’s vision for the future a reality.

There is more then enough business for all of us. We don’t have to be in competition with each other. You can build a successful practice/business that generates you five or six figures a year. It does take a little bit of work and a little bit of time, but isn’t your future worth it?

How Do I Join The Live Call?

Here are all the details you need to join the live call later this week!

Thursday, June 9th

7:00 PM Eastern Standard Time

Conference Dial-in Number: (605) 477-2100

Participant Access Code: 325325#

When you dial the number above you will be greeted with a set of instructions. Just follow the instructions given to you by the operator and you won’t have any problem getting on the call.

Seats Are Limited

If you are planning to join us for the live call I highly recommend you join us a few minutes early as there is a limit to the number of spots available on the call. John Weir is very well known in this profession and we will be promoting this event all over the web so seats will fill up fast for the event.

So please, if you want to join us live you may want to arrive a few minutes early to make sure you get on the call.

Send Me Your Questions

As I mentioned above John and I will be answering your questions live on the call. In the event you are a little shy or can’t make the event you can still send us your questions through e-mail and we’ll do our best to answer them live on the call.

So please send any questions you may have about marketing your business, promoting your business, building your business or whatever you want to ask in regards to marketing and business for Hypnotists. We will answer as many questions as possible.

Post Your Questions In The Comment Area Below. You don’t need to register or anything. Just enter the information required and submit your question to us.

Well I’ve got to run, but John and I look forward to having you on the call and helping you to make six figures or more this year with your hypnosis business.

Your friend,

Josh Houghton

Since I created this hypnosis blog a few years ago one of the most common request I get is to blog more about my life. I’ve always found this to be an interesting request as I would have thought people just want the latest hypnosis based article or review.

Oddly enough that just isn’t the case. I guess it makes sense as I’m the author of this blog and people want to know more about the man behind the keyboard. I’ve never been afraid to talk about my personal life as readers of my mailing list will tell you. I can get pretty personal when talking with people on my mailing list sometimes.

I’ve also have done some post of a more personal nature on my blog as well, but I’ve never done it with any real schedule. I would just write something when I felt the urge to write. So after receiving more emails this month and a few request from other places I’ve decided to do a monthly post, maybe two depending on my mood titled Inside My Mind.

These monthly posts will just be about whatever is on my mind at the time or something going on in my personal life or just some random thoughts. So the main difference will be that it won’t be written in a how to fashion or as a guide. It also may or may not be hypnosis related as well. I’m sure the people who wanted this type of post from me will love it and others who just like pure hypnosis won’t but you can’t please everyone can you?

So the next blog post will be the first edition of this monthly series. Now just because these post will be more of a personal nature doesn’t mean it won’t have some interesting information worth reading. As I said before it will be just whats going on, random thoughts and etc. So maybe I worked with an interesting client that week and decide to tell you how it went. I’m sure you’ll learn something from it. Maybe I learned a life lesson which you can apply in your life, maybe a read a cool book?

So you’ll never know what you’ll get with Inside My Mind. Maybe I’ll blog about my dog or something my wife said to me or an interesting place we went to eat. So you’ll just never know. Either way I think it will be fun and it will allow you to connect with me on a level most people rarely do.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this in the comment area below. I just want to say thank you to everyone who reads the blog. You truly mean a lot to me.

Talk soon

Over the last month or so you may have noticed a lot of post on this hypnosis blog around the subject of building your business, marketing, getting new clients and so on. If you’ve been a long time reader of my blog then you know I’ve always enjoyed the subjects of business, entrepreneurship and marketing.

I’ve always been a very strong believer that anyone who owns or runs a hypnosis practice should have or at the very least learn more about these subjects. Understanding them can make the difference between being a full time, successful Hypnotist and being a part time Hypnotist who barely makes a living doing what they love or not being in business at all.

I’ve talked about these subjects before and I’m sure some of you wondered why? I may have even lost some readers who thought this blog was only going to be about techniques. Don’t get me wrong as I believe having a very strong foundation of training is highly important, but good training can only take you so far, especially if you plan to open up your own hypnosis practice.

Click Here To Visit The Hypnosis Business Coaching Website

Age Regression, Direct Suggestion, Forgiveness Work, Rapid Inductions, Instant Inductions & Parts Work are all great things to know and are useful in helping the client, but have nothing to do with getting prospects to call you and clients to enter your door.

Is It Just A Dream?

Tell me if the following sounds familiar to you in any way. You went to a training, spend a lot of money and time, learned all the newest techniques, received your certification and came out of class pumped, ready to start your own hypnosis practice, help people and make a lot of money. You’ve come out of this hypnosis training with dreams of leaving your day job, dreams of helping people to overcome their problems and dreams of creating a rewarding financial future.

You buy a nice recliner chair, find a decent office, open your door for business and then….NOTHING! You wait, you wait and maybe you get a client, maybe you get two clients, but in the end you barely make any money, you start to question yourself, your training and eventually have to close up shop, go part time or quit and work a normal job again. Does this sound familiar to you? It should as this is the reality for many Hypnotists.

We get lost in the dreams of success when the reality of the situation is the moment you decided to open up a hypnosis practice you became a business owner instead of a Hypnotist.

This Isn’t The Way It Should Be

The example above is a sad one and the truth of the situation is that because the average Hypnotist doesn’t realize or understand that you have to be more then a hypnotist to be successful in this business. This illusion that all you have to do is start a practice and open your door for business is killing our profession. Most Hypnotists are either Hobbyist or working part time and it’s not because they want to. It’s because they just aren’t receiving enough business to keep things going full time. This really concerns me and it should concern you because someone who is doing hypnosis as a hobby or working part time, struggling to barely make ends meet.

As Hypnotists we have an amazing toolbox of skills which can help people change their lives and yet most hypnotist can barely make a living. This isn’t the way it should be.

Why Are Some Hypnotists More Successful Then Others?

Why are Hypnotists like Tom Nicoli, Jerry Kein, Cal Banyan, John Weir, Matt Sison, myself and a few others able to make full time income, get featured on the news, television, newspapers and so on and be branded as the obvious expert in their area? Could it be their location? Is it where we received our training?

Why do you know names such as Tom Nicoli and others? It’s because they are considered experts in their field which is a direct result of their branding and marketing efforts. It’s not magic. We just understand that if you don’t tell anyone what you do then how will they find you and come to your office? To be successful you must market yourself as the expert.

The biggest lie ever sold to us is that all we need to do is know how to hypnotize someone. I’m sure like most people you never went to business school or went after a degree in marketing. Most Hypnotists have never even read a book on business, entrepreneurship or marketing. The real question is how do we learn what we need to know to become successful Hypnotists? Well…the answer is being brought to us by someone you may know who goes by the name of John Weir!

Who Is John Weir?

If you’ve been doing hypnosis for a while or belong to the National Guild of Hypnotists then I’m sure you’ve heard of John. He’s the new face of hypnosis. He’s young, talented, smart and one hell of a marketer/business man. John wasn’t some rich kid and he didn’t have access to a lot of a cash to start his business. He had no business training, no marketing training and at the time he didn’t even have a college education. John, at the age of 19 was delivering pizzas for Pizza Hut for $5.00 an hour.

He learned how to succeed in the hypnosis business with NO money, NO advertising capital and not a single ounce of credibility to his name. Within a pretty short amount of time John went from $5.00 an hour to well over $150 per hour and have more clients then he could handle. All of this came through trial and error and a serious passion to spread the word about the power of hypnosis.

So now let me answer the question which was asked earlier which was how do we learn how to become successful Hypnotists? The answer is pretty clear now….we learn from the failures and successes of someone who was exactly where you are and is where you want to be.

The Hypnosis Business Coaching Home Study Course

John and I haven’t known each other long, but in the short time we have known each other we’ve become good friends because of our similar interests. Out of all the things we have in common the one thing above all else is our love for hypnosis and our belief that our profession could be taken to another level if we had more successful full time hypnotist.

It was out of this passion for wanting others to succeed that John along with his partner in crime, Bob Bicknell created The Hypnosis Business Coaching Home Study Course.

This home study course is a combined effort from John and Bob. Bob has over 30 years of experience as a small business entrepreneur and over 15 years in the financial services industry as a Senior Vice President. His studies and teachings for over 20 years in the power of the subconscious, self talk, marketing, law of attraction, peak human performance and spiritual studies has allowed him to reach his own goals as well as many different people and businesses to reach theirs too.

The Hypnosis Business Coaching Home Study Course is a collection of different modules covering a wide range of subjects, hypnosis sessions designed to install the habits and beliefs you need to be successful, PDF resources, audio programs and much, much more. I’ve reviewed a few different courses that claim to teach marketing to Hypnotists, but as of yet I’ve haven’t seen one that comes close to the level of detail, knowledge and resources that this program provides it’s students. Here is a break down of what you get with the Hypnosis Business Coaching Home Study Course:

Modules

The modules are what you would call the main course. Each module is presented to you in an interview fashion where either Bob ask John questions or vice versa. Each module is around an hour or longer and contains very in-depth details and instructions. Here a small breakdown of some of the info included in the modules.

NOTE: I am only providing a few of the things John and Bob cover as the course is so large and comprehensive I would have to turn this post into an e-book to fit it all in. Also, feel free to listen to any of the modules in whatever order you like. There is no specific order, but I do recommend at least listening to the Introduction Module First and then the module on Guerrilla Marketing. After that, feel free to jump in!

Introduction to Hypnosis Business Coaching

This is the shortest of all the modules and is really nothing more then an introduction, but that doesn’t make it any less powerful. This introduction sets up the rest of the course and also allows you to see why John is so passionate about this program.

Guerrilla Marketing

Our of all the modules this would have to be my favorite one because it shows you what you can truly achieve if you just put in a little time and effort. In this module John takes you to the start of it all and tells you his story, walking you step by step the exact same methods, strategies and techniques he used to start spreading the word about himself and his practice. John leaves no stone unturned in this module covering everything from business cards, brochures & how they should look and what they should say to where and how to pass them out. You’ll learn how to put on corporate events and have companies write you some serious checks! Oh…John even shares his secret to finding office space for cheap and sometimes for free.

Press Release Module

This is the most powerful module of them all in my opinion as John shares his biggest secret to success and holds nothing back. Press releases are one of the quickest and cheapest ways to get known as the obvious expert in your area and to attract the attention of major media outlets. Here are just a few of the topics John covers. You’ll discover what a press release is, how to get in every media outlet in your area for free, how to promote your events/seminars, the Biggest mistake people make when doing press releases and the number one thing to avoid and much more.

Social Media Strategies

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while then you know how I preach that Hypnotist need to learn to utilize the internet. It’s one of the most powerful methods of marketing that exist today and if your not using it you’re being left behind. Well John and Bob share my belief on this subject. In this module you’ll learn how to use Social Media and leverage it to market your business. Sites like Facebook, Youtube, Twitter and many other sites are much more then just a place to find lost, forgotten friends. They are a powerful form of marketing and allows your message to be seen by millions of people. Don’t worry if your new to the internet or these sites as John and Bob walk you step by step through every little detail.

Social Networking

I would recommend you listen to this module next as it goes even deeper into the world of Social Media and really helps you to understand the power of relationships when it comes to marketing. How you can network with others in your profession, meet people who can help you and people who you can help. The internet allows us to market ourselves to the entire world instead of just the local yellow pages. Very cool module.

Unlimited Referrals

Referrals are a critical part of running a successful hypnosis practice. You won’t be in business long without referrals and John is an expert at this subject. In addition, this module also discusses a subject which seems to cause a problem for a lot of hypnotists. Working with other professionals such as doctors, therapist and etc. You’ll learn how to get them to send you tons of referrals and thank you for allowing them to send their patients to you. To date I haven’t seen a program that is this in-depth on referrals from clients, strangers and professionals. Honestly, in my opinion John could sell this one module as a separate course as it’s just that good. The amount of detail John goes into is mind blowing to say the least.

Youtube Module

If you aren’t using Youtube right now then what are you waiting for. You’ll learn how to find keywords which will help your videos rank higher, how to optimize your videos, Discover who your audience is, How to create videos without ever being seen, What type of equipment you’ll need to make your life simple, resources and so much more.

Persuasion and Sales Bonus

This is considered a bonus module, but an important one in my opinion. What good are prospects if you can’t turn them into paying clients? This module breaks down everything you need to know about closing the sale and getting them into your office. Personally this course be another course in its own right. Here are just a few of the things you’ll learn. How to avoid the biggest mistake people make on the phone, how to keep possible clients from shopping for prices, how to have your clients save thousands of dollars, the power of open ended questions, how to stay in control during the call, how to get inside your clients head and have them want to give you money, how to build value, the words to avoid when selling the client and much, more more.

Hypnosis Sessions

If the modules weren’t enough for you John has included 14 powerful hypnosis sessions designed to install the beliefs and habits of successful hypnotist directly into your subconscious mind. Here are the 14 different recordings you get with the program:

Abundance Meditation

Resource Guides

If the modules and the hypnosis sessions weren’t enough John has included a number of PDF resources for you as well. A few of these are outlines of some of the modules, but others are completely new resources such as the article marketing guide and many more.

3 Simple Ways To Stay Motivated

11 Successful Tips For Growing Your Hypnosis Business

Article Marketing Resource Guide

Plan of Action Guide

Press Release Resource Guide

Simple Strategies to Get Medical Referrals

Social Network Strategies

Press Release For Hypnotists Audio Program

As I mentioned earlier in this review. Press Releases are very powerful when used correctly and John wants to make sure you become an expert on them and so in addition to everything else he has also included his program called Press Release Power For Hypnotists. This is a complete and separate audio program which features:

The Press Release Power For Hypnotists Mp3 Audio Program

The Press Release E-book

3 prewritten press releases for that you can start using right now!

The Crash Course In Selling Hypnosis E-Book

A little while back John wrote a book which was only available for purchase through the National Guild of Hypnotist, but John has decided to include it within this program for you.

Bonus Gift: Hypnosis Script E-Book

As a special bonus gift to everyone who takes advantage of this program John is including his hypnosis script e-book. This is a complete e-book full of scripts to help guide you during your sessions.

Additional Modules To Come Later On

In addition to all the material you get above John will also, sometime in the future be releasing additional modules which you will get for free when your a existing customer. Obviously I don’t know what topics they will cover as they haven’t been created yet, but from what John has told me he will continue to release modules which will cover a number of different topics related to building your business and marketing.

There Has Never Been A Program Like This Before

As you can see John and Bob have sparred no expense in bringing you a complete, in depth and comprehension course that will give you all the skills, resources, knowledge and tools you need to be successful as a Hypnotist. As I said earlier it would take me forever to list everything covered in this course as it’s filled with gold! Every successful Hypnotist in our business has used these tactics or a mixture of these methods and techniques at some point in time to become the obvious expert in their area. You can too!

As you listen to the program you can hear the passion in John and Bob’s voice and you can see that this course means everything to them. John truly believes that this program can change the course of Hypnosis forever and guess what….I completely agree. I know that reviews should be a little bias, but I too believe that our profession isn’t living up to what it could be and that’s because most of us are part time or aren’t even practicing and this is a direct result of Hypnotists know be taught how to market their new practice.

There Isn’t Enough Business For All Of Us – Not True!

One of biggest problems I see with our profession is the competition model. Hypnotists tend to act as if they are competing with every other hypnotist in their area. This creates a division between all of us and this way of thinking is completely untrue.

There is more then enough business for everyone. There is an abudence amount of money and clients so stop competing with each other. This way of thinking actually holds you back when you should be moving forward. There is no excuse for you not to be making five or six figures a year putting the strategies and methods in this program to use.

I talked to John a lot during the creation of this course and have seen it evolve into something more then a home study course. I have seen it evolve into a vision for the future of our profession. I personally would like to see this course taught to every future hypnosis student. I know that by exposing yourself to the knowledge in this course you will change your life if you act on the information presented. I have a background in business and marketing and I can speak from my own experience that this course is the real deal.

I have yet to see a course as n-depth as this program and that contains the wisdom from start to finish of one of the most successful hypnotist in the United States today.

Hypnosis Business Coaching Review Conclusion

I can’t promise you’ll be successful using all of the information laid out in this program, but that’s because I can’t see what you do after you listen to this information. All I can say is that the same information in this course has and is being used by the most successful Hypnotists of our time and it would cost you thousands and thousands of dollars to get a hold of this information on your own from different sources. Let’s not even talk about how many hours it would take for you to acquire this knowledge.

I’ve reviewed a lot of programs here on this blog and have read even more in my personal and professional life and this has to be the most powerful program I’ve ever reviewed. I have yet to find any flaws within the program. The audio is clear and sounds good, the resources are professional produced, the information is golden.

This review is already long enough so let me finish with these few words. If you are serious about becoming a practicing hypnotist and want to help the most people you can while making insane amounts of money then you NEED this course. Look at this course as an investment in your life instead of another training program.

Don’t look back at this moment 5 years from now and think, why didn’t I take action. Success can be yours if you truly want it. If you decide for some strange reason that this program isn’t for you then please do me a favor and at least tell others about it. Hopefully John’s vision as well as my own for this program can become a reality….someday.

Also, if forever reason this program isn’t for you I want to ask you something. Even if you decide to not invest in this program I want you to please help John, Bob and me spread the word about this course. If you truly love hypnosis and helping people then do this for us profession. We need more full time, successful hypnotist. If you have a Facebook account please share this with others, if you have a twitter account please tweet it. If you have a NGH Chapter let your members know.

You can make a difference more then you know for our profession. Sometimes it just starts with ONE person taking action. God Bless

I hope you’ve been following all of his articles lately because you should be getting an extra 3 to 4 clients a week just from the free information John has provided.

If your not then you should be asking yourself if your taking enough action and if you truly want your hypnosis business to succeed. If your a part time Hypnotist you should use this information to make the transition to becoming a successful full time hypnotist. Our profession needs more full time Hypnotist.

Okay, let me get off of my soapbox. Please enjoy the article below and take action on it. You’ll never know what you can achieve until you make an attempt. Also, I’m going to make a big announcement Thursday which could impact Hypnotists and their businesses all over the world. No Hype…just a mission and goal both John and I believe in. Well until next time…

—————————————————————————————–

In the field of hypnotism, we have 3 major pillars on which the majority of hypnotists focus their attention on. Two of these pillars are glaringly obvious; weight reduction and smoke cessation. These pillars get a tremendous amount of attention and rightfully so due to our effectiveness in these areas.

Over the years, I have conducted many corporate programs addressing these issues until it dawned on me that I have been neglected the other major pillar in our profession. This pillar is so simple to succeed with, especially in corporate programs, yet it is one of the most under-marketed programs by hypnotists.

The pillar that I am talking about is working in the area of corporate stress reduction. In this blog I am going to explain why stress reduction programs are quite possibly the best and easiest program to conduct.

For starters, nothing reduces a person’s stress level quite like a great hypnosis session. The hypnotic induction by itself can help a person let go of a tremendous amount of pent up stress, let alone an entire session. So you know right off the bat that you will be successful at reducing the stress in all that attend. Everybody leaves a stress reduction program feeling amazing and notices instant results.

Next, as hypnotists we offer something that no other stress reduction program can provide. Throughout the years, I have attended many different stress reduction programs and all of them were the same. All they did was talk about what stress is, and what stresses us out. People know this and don’t need more information on stress what they need are techniques they can utilize.

As hypnotists, we can teach people how to relax, do self-hypnosis, create anchors for relaxation and so on. Not only can we teach techniques, since we deal with the subconscious mind we can help implement these strategies into the mind in such a way that people actually use them when needed. Think of all the type-a people who don’t know how to relax. What valuable skills we can teach them that could change their lives.

Third, stress causes people to find ways to cope. For many this means using negative behaviors like smoking or overeating to distract from the stress. Teaching these techniques can help people resort less to these negative behaviors which can benefit a company tremendously.

Finally, the market for this work is huge. The majority of workplaces are very stressful environments. In addition, most companies have established budgets for employee programs just like what we offer.

I hope this blog has inspired you to look into creating your own stress reduction corporate program. It is my feeling that if you run with this idea you will find it generates lots of money, helps a great deal of people, and will boost the exposure of your business.
