Is Hypnosis Evil Or Just Misunderstood?

Today has been a pretty slow day overall. I’m just sitting here in front of my computer trying to think of the next step to take with this hypnosis blog.

As I was sitting here, an idea came to me which I think would benefit everyone. One of the biggest problems facing the profession of hypnosis is that the general public has been miseducated. Many people have been led to believe that the stuff seen in the movies and other media are the truth when it comes to hypnosis.

In my opinion, it’s because of the public not being educated that the majority of our society believes the rumors and myths about hypnosis. I believe that it is time to educate the public and let the truth be known. My goal with this article and others to come is to lay the fears, rumors and myths about this wonderful profession to rest.

Is Hypnosis Evil As Most People Believe?

The first part of this series is dedicated to letting the world know that hypnosis is NOT magic or evil in any way. The reason so many people think hypnosis is a form of magic is because of lack of understanding and knowledge about what we do.

People see us yell “sleep” and the next thing you know the person has dropped into some type of magical trance where we control them. Some people even believe hypnosis can reveal their secrets.

Honestly, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Whenever I hear this, I just want to laugh. The honest truth is that if I controlled people, I wouldn’t be writing this hypnosis blog. I would be hypnotizing people to give me money and everything else, but that isn’t how hypnotism works.

Beliefs Alter Reality

To aid me in getting my point across, I want you to think back to that time in history when people believed the world was flat. The belief was that if we sailed too far, we would fall off the earth. This was accepted as truth back then, and for someone to say otherwise meant they had to be crazy. The only reason the average person believed that the earth was flat was from lack of understanding.

Over time a few different people stood up to question this belief and guess what happened to these people? Many were laughed at, and some were even forced out of their home and towns. In a few rare cases, some of were thought to be evil or possessed by the devil.

They just didn’t have the information available and kept very closed minds. It is because of this that people continued to live in ignorance. Back then, the belief was that if we don’t understand something it must be magic, evil, fake, a lie, etc.

It’s funny how people back then dismissed others with different beliefs as ‘crazy’. One thing that still amazes me is how after all these years, we continue to dismiss things we don’t understand.

For example, consider the Salem Witch Trials. This is one of the worst cases in history of people jumping to conclusions. I remember one story of a victim. When a girl turned 18, she developed some type of sickness. The people didn’t understand what was going on with her, so they concluded that she was a witch and killed her at the stake.

In hindsight, we can now say she may have been suffering from some type of illness or disorder.

I’m sorry to say that due to the people being miseducated and not having all the facts, this poor girl was murdered for no reason, as were countless others. The reason for me telling these stories is to get you to understand that we, as a race, tend to reject things we are ignorant of, or just don’t understand.

The truth of the matter is that no one knows everything. So does that mean that just because you simply don’t understand something, it’s evil? I can only hope that the human race has come further than that.

Another example would be the medical science of today. I’m not a doctor and don’t know anything about medicine other that it can help to make us better. I don’t understand how the medicine actually heals my body, so does that make medical science magic, mystical or from the devil?

It just means that I don’t understand how medicine works. If I did some research, read a book or two, then I would have a better understanding of how it works.

So if you take the examples I have given and apply them to hypnosis, you can understand my point here. Just because something looks odd or strange doesn’t make it evil or magic in any way. The fact is you just don’t understand how it works.

The next question on the list: If hypnosis isn’t magic or from the devil, then what is it? Hypnosis is nothing more than a natural state of suggestibility, focus, and attention. And that’s just a loose definition. Some people tend to think relaxation is needed for hypnosis, but this isn’t true.

Relaxation seems to be produced by suggestion and helps with hypnosis, but it isn’t needed to establish hypnosis.

Have You Been Hypnotized?

The reality is that all hypnosis is nothing more than self-hypnosis. Hypnosis is a natural state and everyone goes into it at least twice a day or even more. There is nothing magical or evil about hypnosis. So you have to ask yourself this question. Have you been hypnotized?

For instance, have you ever been driving on the highway for a long time and feel like you have zoned out? You’re just driving along, and all of a sudden, you’re at your destination. You don’t really remember driving all the way there and making every turn.

Another example is when you’re driving, and someone happens to slam on their brakes in front of you. You seem to snap out of being zoned out immediately and hit your brakes to avoid the accident. It’s almost as if you became hyper alert very quickly. This zoned out feeling is a form of hypnosis.

Have you ever sat in class while the teacher was talking and started to daydream? Then all of a sudden, the teacher calls your name and you quickly come out of your dream and act surprised or become alert very quickly. When this happens, you’ve experienced another form of hypnosis.

The moment right before you fall asleep and right before you wake up is also another stage of hypnosis. Staring at the TV and someone calls your name, but you never hear them is also another form of hypnosis.

All of the things mentioned above are a form of hypnosis, and everyone has entered into hypnosis whether you know it or not. Have you ever watched a really sad movie, and you were so into it that you started to cry? You might not even have heard your friend call your name until the second try. That is another form of hypnosis.

The reality is that you actually heard the person call your name the first time, but your attention and focus was on the movie, so you ignored it until they said your name again. These are just a few of many examples of how people go into hypnosis all the time.

I Hope I’ve Changed Your View of Hypnosis A Little

I hope this post has given you something to think about. I hope you now realize that hypnosis isn’t magic. We live in the 21st century and have come a long way since the days of the Salem Witch Trial. We have been to space and back and come a long way as a species.

We need to leave the old beliefs behind and learn to keep an open mind. We need to realize that if we don’t understand something, it doesn’t make it magic or evil. All it means is that we don’t understand it and that can be fixed by just educating yourself about the subject of hypnosis.
