The entirety of Derren Brown is cloaked in a shroud of mystery and engaging charm with a fantastically attractive British accent….but what makes his effects so powerful?
What makes him different than any other mentalist or hypnotist out there? He leaves his audiences stunned and exhilarated with a deep emotional connection stronger than what can be produced through the disappearance of an elephant…he is the legend that is Derren Brown.
The difference between a hypnosis skit and Mr. Brown’s magical effects is the fact that he does something some people think is a sin….he *gasps*… mixes hypnosis and magic to produce layered effects that stun audiences of all time. What is the product of creating layered effects? Fooling layers of audiences.
The laymen audience watches Mr. Brown and the majority of them (unless they are exceedingly gullible or perhaps quite dull) walk away from seeing him thinking that it is possible that he might have special skills he developed over years. Others believe that he is psychic….even though Mr. Brown attests against such claims. The next layer goes down to the hypnotists, believing that he has exceedingly exceptional hypnosis skills that are bordering revolutionary. The last layer slowly seeps down into the magicians, seeing the “magical” techniques through the hypnosis set up.
Derren Brown is revolutionary in the sense that by the time the true technique is revealed, it is no longer something that should be flaunted. It is a piece of art that has trickled from layer to layer of awareness until the trickery behind the trickery is a beautiful experience. Perhaps that is what we need more in this world….layers. Or perhaps there are hundreds of layers within us all, and all we need to learn to do is to look harder. Perhaps Mr. Brown understood that beautifully flawed nature in human beings and that is why we have been captivated by this cheeky goateed psychological illusionist.

Yes, I sometimes hear people talk about Derren’s talents for hypnosis as they try and learn from him. I have to remind people that he uses a combination of hypnosis, magic, and showmanship (as he says himself). So take it all with a pinch of salt and enjoy!
