Thank you for posting a well written and laid out Mind Model. I'm trying to help explain it to a friend in need and found more things that didn't lay it out so well than things I'd consider worthy of sharing with her.

Kudos!

Hey Gloria,

It's always nice to meet other NGH Members. You know the fun thing about our profession is every hypnotist has a different mind model or take on the brain/mind. I tend to follow the Gerald Kein mind model as well as the Banyan Mind Model since, well both of them we're my teachers. So of course I'm a little bias :)

I agree with you that their is a physical part of our brains that plays a part in these roles and functions, but what is the driving force that works behind them. I think we can both agree that the medical model or science model will always be the accepted model as hypnotists just use this mind model of the conscious and sub conscious or the conscious, sub conscious and unconscious
to better explain the roles and functions, but technically there are physical components that also could be compared to the 'sub conscious' so does a sub conscious even really exist? Does the human soul actually exist or are we just humans due to the different roles and functions of certain body parts all working together?

I don't believe the subconscious is the unconscious mind, but one could not exist without the other in a metaphorically sense of course.I view the word unconscious in many ways depending on the context and content of the way its used.

So technically speaking unconscious does mean deep sleep, coma or unresponsive to stimuli, but depending on the person using it the word can have many different meanings as well such as underneath awarness or etc. Throughout history it has appeared that society creates the context or meaning of a word based on how people use it. For instance, cool typically mean cold or a something close to that. Sorry, I don't have a grammar book around :)

Yet in today's world it can mean something is good or great, all are technically accepted, but I agree with you that correct grammar would be the accepted term if we we're using correct grammar. Wow, how did I get off subject, please forgive me. Either way whatever works for the hypnotist is fine with me as long as they they know they are just 'models' which technically the mind is as well. Sorry if my response sound crazy, but I have had 7 sessions today and I am drained.

Thanks for your comment Gloria as its hypnotists like you who keep this great profession alive. Btw, nice blog too :)

I would like to know if others agree with the definition of the unconscious mind given above. I was taught in school that brain stem controls all the automatic functions (the ones we don't have to think about, like breathing, heartbeat, or blinking). This is part of the brain, not the mind.

I have heard many hypnotists refer to the subconscious mind as the "unconscious," but I believe this is a misuse of the word. Most people will understand it and make no differentiation between the two. Strictly speaking, the word "unconscious" is an adjective used to describe someone who is completely unresponsive to outside stimuli, as in deep sleep, or a coma.

I am a stickler when it comes to grammar and the choice of words. That is why I am also called the philologue (see philologsblog.blogspot.com). I avoid using the word unconscious when I speak about hypnosis and when I speak to someone in the state of hypnosis. I will instead use the word "subconscious."
