Hypnosis and NLP Trainer Jamie Smart shares with the readers of my blog one of his favorite conversational hypnosis techniques. Excellent Article!

The Ultimate Conversational Hypnosis Technique

In this article we’re going to look at my favourite conversational hypnosis technique. As you begin to use this powerful approach more and more intentionally, you’ll be amazed at how positively people will respond to you.

You may already be aware that over the past few months, I’ve spent days in the editing suite, poring over the footage from our “Secrets of Hypnosis” training. There was 8 hours of training, & 3 cameras worth of footage, so it was the longest time I’ve ever spent watching myself & paying attention to how the people I’m working with (including the “audience”) respond to me.

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen yourself talking or presenting to people on video before, but one of the things that happens as you relax & watch yourself from a variety of angles & perspectives is this: you start to become very aware of how people respond to what you say & do, very aware of the subtle (& not-so-subtle) shifts that give you clues to how your messages are being received.

For example: at one point in the programme, I want to “disarm” any scepticism people have about hypnosis (on the film, you can see one of the members of the group with his arms crossed in a classic “sceptical” posture), so I told a story – I said:

“I was at the gym the other day, & I was talking to a woman who was studying psychology, & when I told her I was involved with NLP, she made a face. So I said ‘I sense that you’ve got some reservations about it.” She explained that she was somewhat sceptical…

It reminds me of the time a man was sent to me by his boss for coaching. We met, & after I introduced myself, he said (with classic sceptical pose) “I’m usually pretty sceptical about this sort of thing”.

“Usually?” I responded.

“Well, you come very highly recommended”, he replied.

I said, “Well you should be sceptical.”

He looked puzzled. “Why?” he asked.

I explained, “Until you’ve experienced just how powerful this stuff can be in your own life, why would you have any reason to be anything else?”

He relaxed visibly, uncrossed his arms, & engaged fully with our coaching session.

(By the way, crossed arms don’t “mean” someone is sceptical – sometimes they just feel comfortable with them crossed, but it can be a useful clue when combined with other information).

The power of stories

By now, you’ve probably guessed that my favourite conversational hypnosis technique is stories.

As human beings, the ability to tell & listen to stories is an evolutionary development (remember, until a few hundred years ago, there was no printing press – stories were pretty much the only way to pass on the wisdom of the tribe from one generation to the next).

When we listen to stories, we do a “me too” – we go inside our own experience to find examples to help make sense of the story we’re hearing.

This is a very hypnotic experience.

This is why when you tell someone a story, they’ll tell you about something similar that happened to them.

1) Decide to see yourself as a storyteller & start developing your skills.

Stories are such a powerful for skill for conversational hypnosis, because as soon as you start telling one, the effect on your listeners is powerful:

They age regress – we all got told stories as children, & there are lots of positive anchors associated with them for most people.

They relax & take off their “armour” – after all, it’s just a story!

They do a “me too”, & start finding or creating references for what you’re telling them about.

Remember, people will only do something once they’ve imagined doing it.

As I came to the end of my story about the sceptical man I was coaching, I watched with a deep sense of satisfaction as the man in the audience whose arms were crossed suddenly relaxed, changed his posture & uncrossed his arms.

He’d gone inside his own experience to make sense of the sceptic story, & created a reference for himself of moving from scepticism, to curiosity, to being fully engaged. And of course, once he imagined it, he started to do it.

When I saw this piece of footage, I told Dave (the editor) “You have to get this on the DVD“, so he used his technical wizardry to do a shot within shot so you can see the audience responses as you’re watching me deliver the training.

2) Go back to the beginning of this tip & highlight all the different stories I’ve told. Ask yourself “What is he trying to accomplish with this story?”

Part of how I got good at using stories to influence people was by listening to how other people who got great results were doing it. I said to myself “You can become a master storyteller” then started to watch, listen & practice.

3) Next time you’re having a conversation with someone, ask yourself “What is one of the stories I could tell them now to help them feel good?” Then tell the story, & notice the response you get.

Noticing the responses you get is key. The visual component is an essential aspect of hypnosis (conversational or otherwise), because this is how you notice what response you’re getting.

The best hypnotherapists

Great public speakers

Highly paid consultants

Strong, charismatic leaders

The most effective managers

The funniest comedians

Great coaches

What do all these people have in common? They notice the response they’re getting, & alter what they’re doing & saying accordingly.

Ericksonian Hypnosis Language Pattern Cards Review

Hypnosis and NLP Trainer Jamie Smart runs a well known and successful Hypnosis & NLP Store called “Salad”, which is pretty well known within the hypnosis and NLP communities.

Jamie and his wonderful staff sent me a few things to check out and to be honest they we’re all pretty good, but one product really stood out to me. Salad’s own Ericksonian Hypnosis Cards.

Master Ericksonian Hypnosis While Playing A Game of Cards – So Easy!

I have been to the Salad store before and saw these cards for sale, but never really gave too much thought to them. I knew a lot of well known people recommended the cards such as John La Valle, Jonathan Altfeld, Doug O’Brien, Karen Hearon but as it goes I ended up looking over this product for far too long. When the package arrived I opened it up and at first glance all I saw was a deck of green cards. To be honest my first impression was “this is it?”

As I continued to open the package I noticed that I also received a CD in a really nice DVD case in addition to the cards and a really nice clear carrying case. I don’t know about all of you, but when I receive stuff I didn’t plan on such as extras I’m always happy.

Side Note: I just got done talking with my connection over at Salad and she wanted me to mention that the CD I received doesn’t actually come with The Ericksonian Hypnosis Cards and it’s sold as a stand alone product. If your interested in the Ericksonian Hypnosis Cards Unpacked CD you can find it Here.

This was mistake and I don’t want everyone thinking they are getting the Cd when they order the cards when in reality it’s a stand alone product. Sorry for any confusion. Either way I still end up giving a brief review of the cd in this review as it was included with the package I was sent. I have decided to do a seperate review of this product in just a few weeks though that will be a full in depth review.

It turns out it was just a extra sent to me to review as well. So once again sorry for any confusion. Now, lets get back to the review!

I have to admit that I was impressed with the clear and strong carrying case that comes with the cards. It fits pretty well into your pocket and does a great job of keeping your cards from getting all messed up and bent. Personally I wish playing cards would use a case similar to the one that came with the Hypnosis cards, but I guess we can’t get everything we want. It was just a nice touch if you ask me.

The cards are set up like a normal deck of cards with all the suites, jokers and etc. So yes, if you wanted to you could actually play a game of cards with this deck. Jamie Smart and his team actually created a game or two you can play using these cards which is mentioned on one of the cards and again on the CD.

The cards don’t actually teach you Ericksonian Hypnosis, but they do teach you Ericksonian Language Patterns which are a vital part to learning conversational hypnosis, which is another name for Ericksonian Hypnosis. These are the same language patterns used by Dr. Milton Erickson himself.

Now that I saw what the cards contained it all made sense to me. The cards act as flash cards in a way, which makes learning Ericksonian Language Patterns easy. I have included an image of one of the cards so you can see what you are getting on the back of each one as I thought this may be helpful for all of you.

Here is what you get on the back of each Ericksonian Hypnosis Card:

**A unique language pattern for each card

**A breakdown of how to use it in a conversational or hypnosis session

**Why it works and how it works and extra information

What they have done for me?

I have to admit that these little cards really blew me away as I was expecting something different. Having these cards allows me to learn these patterns wherever I’m at and at any time. I don’t have to shift through countless books on Milton Erickson or language patterns.

I have all the best patterns right in my pocket. This makes learning the patterns easy because you tend to remember them just as you would a deck of cards. I have to admit since I got these cards and I have been using them I have been getting really good at these patterns.

I find myself using them in situations now without even thinking about it really. It’s as if the more I’m exposed to them the more they become a part of my daily language. I’m even using them in my own custom sentences and patterns rather than the ones that come with the deck.

I have also began using some of these patterns within my hypnosis sessions and have noticed a slight increase. Clients are reporting a much more personal outcome than before, but this could just be me seeing what I want to see, but hell if they worked for Milton Erickson than why not me too?

What is on the CD?

Eventually I listened to the CD and it really is a nice compliment to the cards. It basically explains how the cards works, gives you insight into them and what they can do for you as well as gives you a game or two you can actually play with the cards which can increase your learning of the patterns. I didn’t have to listen to the cd to figure out the cards as I have some experience with Ericksonian hypnosis, but for someone new the cd is a great feature.

What Features could be better?

It’s actually very hard to find something wrong with these cards as they are a very simple product. Being a simple product makes it where their isn’t a lot to comment on. These cards are designed to teach you language patterns and they do just that. If I were to say the cards had any flaw its how the information is presented on the back of the card.

If you look at the image above the information just runs on with no breaks and that can be a little confusing. Once again we have to keep in mind that they don’t have a lot of room to put the information, but it did take me a couple of readings as the way it’s written on the back tends to hurt my eyes and I get confused easily without breaks in my writing, but that is a very small flaw in the grand scheme of things and the whole eye thing, well maybe I just need glasses?(joking, sort of)

Conclusion

So for my first review of the year I have to give Salad’s Ericksonian Hypnosis Cards a 9 out 10. Jamie Smart and his wonderful team have really taken something as complex as Ericksonian Language Patterns and made it where anyone could learn. If you want to learn language patterns than this is really a great tool and something every hypnotists, in my opinion should have in their collection.

Jamie Smart is back with another great article. Many people think hypnosis is something done to us by a hypnotist, but is hypnosis something more natural?

We Have All Been Hypnotized

“The fish would be the last creature to discover water.”
Clyde Kluchholn

We are all better hypnotists than we realize. In fact, the hypnotic process is so embedded in the human experience that people tend to be oblivious to it. Starting today, we’re going to explore some of the ways you can wake up from the hypnotic trances that don’t serve you, & start using hypnotic processes to enrich your life. But first, a story…

I was flying home from Canada the other day, & the woman sitting next to me asked me what I do for a living. I have a variety of answers to the question, but on this occasion I said “I teach people hypnosis”.

“Oh!” she said. “I don’t actually believe in hypnosis.”

“Neither do I”, I replied. “In fact, if it didn’t work so well, I’d have nothing to do with it.” At this point her eyes defocused as she tranced out while trying to make sense of what I’d just said.

Hypnosis is a natural human process

Hypnosis is a natural human process. We each have the ability to go into a variety of altered states. And we all have the ability to translate words into sensory representations (images, sounds, feelings, smells & tastes) that “make sense” to our deeper body-mind. Furthermore, when we learned language as children, we entered into the nested hypnotic trance of

Our culture

Our ancestors

Our parents

Our neighborhood

Think about it. When you learned language, you weren’t just learning that the sound “Mummy” meant that creature who cuddled you, & the sound “Daddy” meant that creature that cuddled mummy. You were also learning a number of other things, including:

The nature of human relationships

What different gestures & voice tones “meant”

What was expected of you and for you

What your place in the world was and would be

And much, much more

This hypnotic process is so subtle and pervasive, that we don’t necessarily even recognize it as such. When the anthropologist Clyde Kluchholn said “The fish would be the last creature to discover water”, it was a metaphor for the human relationship to our culture. But I think the metaphor applies even more deeply to the human relationship with hypnosis.

We’ve all been hypnotized to think of ourselves, our world, & our potentials in certain ways; some of them life-affirming & others less-so. The first step to taking control of what Stephen Wolinsky calls “The trances people live” is to become aware of this hypnotic reality:

1) Open to the possibility that you & everyone you know has been ‘hypnotized’ to perceive reality & themselves in a certain way.

There is no dark conspiracy

I’m not suggesting some dark conspiracy; hypnosis is a natural process, & our ability to enter into the trance of our families & our cultures has given us an evolutionary advantage; the ability to pass information, learning & knowledge from one generation to the next. However…

The cumulative effect of this ability to pass information from one generation to the next is progress. The world is speeding up. Many of the “truths” which one generation relies upon as “wisdom” are obsolete to the next one.

2) When you encounter a “rule” about the way the world is, it can be useful to question it. Ask “Who says?”

“You need money to make money” > “Who says?”

“Wealthy people are greedy” > “Who says?”

“I’ll never be any good at [x/y/z]” > “Who says?”

“You can’t expect to get paid for doing what you love” > “Who says”

“It’s difficult to change beliefs” > “Who says?”

It’s time to wake up

The solution is to start choosing our hypnotic realities more and more purposefully. As progress continues to speed up, & the rate of change gets faster & faster, the most successful people will be those most able to change their beliefs & update their mental models. The ones who prosper will be those who can move easily from one hypnotic trance to another.

3) Ask yourself “What beliefs / frames of mind will be most useful to me in this situation?”

Many of us learned that rigid beliefs were a sign of reliability – that our beliefs need to be entirely consistent, inflexible & unchanging.

Get comfortable with paradoxes

However, many studies have shown that the most successful people are actually able to hold conflicting beliefs. They are comfortable with paradoxes.

But our beliefs about the world are just a map. The world is changing, so our maps need to keep changing. Learning to use the power of hypnosis is a great way to increase your own flexibility, & increase your success.

“It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.”

Better Coaching with Hypnosis

In this article, I’m going to reveal how you can make hypnosis an integral part of the coaching process & why that’s a good idea. I’ve come out of ‘corporate retirement’ this week to do a couple of days of executive coaching for an old friend of mine. When I do this sort of work, I tend to do “breakthrough” sessions, where I’ll spend a few hours coaching someone, help them make some big changes, then maybe not see them again for months or even years.

As you can imagine, when you’ve got a small amount of time to make some big changes, you use whatever is going to make the largest difference. So one of the things I tend to use is hypnosis.

“But hypnosis isn’t coaching!” I hear the coaching purists say. But I disagree. In fact, I’ll make a provocative statement.

All coaches use hypnosis!

That’s right! All coaches use hypnosis. Think about it:

• Every word you say to someone causes them to make mental images & other representations.

• When you ask someone a deep question, it contains presuppositions that cause them to engage unconscious processes.

• When you get into rapport with someone, you start leading each others states

• When you get people to imagine some desired future even or circumstances, you’re getting them to hallucinate (& maybe even re-orienting them in time).

All of the above are part of coaching, so coaching is a hypnotic process. So the question isn’t “Is it OK to use hypnosis in coaching?” You’re already a hypnotist, whether you like it or not. The real question is “How can I use hypnotic processes even more intentionally & effectively as part of my coaching process?”

Here are a few tips:

1) Recognise the hypnotic nature of language

If your coaching process involves talking with people, then you’re doing hypnosis. Once you recognise this fact, then you can start to be more intentional about how you use language to guide people’s attention in various ways.

2) Identify & utilise your existing hypnotic opportunities

When my co-trainer, Peter Freeth, is coaching someone, one of the first things he’ll say is something along the lines of “The fact that you’ve come here today means you’ve already done 80% of the work towards making this change. You’ve identified a change you want to make, you’ve found someone to work with, you’ve scheduled a session & you’ve shown up. And as a result, you’re going to be able to make the changes you want to quickly & easily.”

Look at what Peter says again. If you deliver it congruently, it’s a powerful piece of hypnosis. It uses “A means B” logic to frame the session, paces the person’s experience, then uses “X causes Y” logic to create a powerful expectation of success.

There are a number of opportunities within every coaching session that are going to be the same every time – think about it:

• Doing the initial deal & scheduling your first session
• Greeting the client
• Finding out what they want to accomplish
• Saying goodbye
• etc

Each of these is a ‘hypnotic opportunity’. You can create “hypnotic accelerators” (like Peter’s one) to massively increase the power & effectiveness of your coaching sessions, & you can use the same ones every time if you want to.

3) Learn the principles of hypnotic communication

I believe that learning hypnosis is one of the most powerful ways of improving your communication skills. Why? Because when you’re doing hypnosis, you have to pay particular attention to:

• The other person
• Your communication goals
• The language you’re using

Language is powerful, & language is hypnotic. Learning hypnosis is one of the most powerful ways to get better coaching skills to help your clients with.
