Self hypnosis is a fundamental and universal human trait. We’re all doing it, all of the time, often without even knowing it. It would be impossible to get through the day without doing it, in fact.

Trance is really just a focused state of attention – so if you’ve ever been fascinated by a TV show, a piece of music or a passing cloud, then you’ve been in a trance. Attention can also be focused inwards, of course. Those times when you’ve stared out the window, thinking about what you should have said to someone twenty years ago, are also a form of hypnotic trance.

But self hypnosis can be so much more than just woolgathering. By taking control of our natural self hypnotic tendencies, we can solve problems, bring about positive changes in our behavior, experience a resourceful state, boost our energy, and so on.

To begin your self hypnotic practice, all you really need to do is find somewhere where you can sit comfortably for a while without being disturbed. It’s also a good idea to self hypnotise with some form of intent – perhaps to mentally rehearse something that you’d like to go well, or to deeply relax after a stressful day at work.

Some people also advocate setting a time limit and a “safety catch” suggestion.  In practice, it’s probably unlikely that you’d be so catatonically in trance that you wouldn’t hear the smoke detector going off, but if it makes you feel more comfortable, you could say something to yourself along the following lines;

“It’s my intention to relax into trance for the next ten minutes, in order to x. If anything happens that requires my urgent attention during this time, I will immediately come back to everyday awareness, ready to deal with it. After ten minutes, I will come back to the room feeling relaxed and refreshed and alert.”

The following are both reliable methods for self hypnosis.

The Body Scan Technique

1.	Allow your eyes to close, and become aware of your breathing.

2.	As you breathe out, imagine a sensation of relaxation at the top of your head – this can be a feeling, or a colour, or even a sound.

3.	With each out-breath, imagine that sensation of relaxation traveling down from the head, to the face, to the shoulders, to the arms and hands, and so on down the body.

4.	Repeat, being curious to note that you can relax a little deeper each time that sensation of relaxation moves down the body.

5.	Drift gently and naturally into your main self hypnotic work.

6.	Come back to the room whenever you’re ready.

The CALM Technique

This self hypnotic induction was devised by the therapist David Botsford.

1.	Begin to focus your attention on your breathing, breathing slowly and deeply. Notice what happens when you breathe out for longer than you breathe in.

2.	Each time you breathe out, silently say the word “calm” to yourself.

3.	Each time you breathe out, see the word “calm” written in front of you.

4.	Let your eyes close any time they want. If they want to remain open, that’s OK.

5.	Drift gently and naturally into your main self-hypnotic work.

6.	Come back to the room whenever you’re ready.

The wonderful thing about self hypnosis is that it’s one of the few times in life when you can only ever be right. Just like the old man in the story, who survived a fall into the river by accommodating himself to the flow of the water, so you can accommodate yourself to the experience of trance as it unfolds. Go with it, and see where it takes you – and the more you do it, the better it gets!

Hypnosis and meditation go together like peanut butter and jelly. The earliest known hypnosis was done in groups while the participants chanted and meditated. The expected results may have been similar to those that we look for, focus and clarity of mind.

Many people have a problem with hypnosis because they believe it is a way for someone else to control their mind. Actually, a positive attitude and picturing a desired outcome of some event in your life is a form of self-hypnosis.

There are obvious differences in hypnosis and meditation. In the truest sense, meditation is the absence of all thought. A chanting or thinking of a single word or phrase during meditation is to remove other thought. It’s not intended to concentrate on the actual thing that the word represents.

If you spend your meditation time worrying over some problem and visualizing a solution, you’re contemplating, and you cannot be considered in meditation at all. The use of hypnosis and meditation together is a bit tricky if you don’t understand how one fits with the other.

Hypnosis is conceived as thought to achieve a certain goal. If you go into meditation with the desire to solve a problem, you have completely missed the boat; however, if you consider the positive attitude of going into that same meditation with the desire to clear the mind, you make the hypnosis work for you.

If your desire is to quit some bad habit such as smoking or overeating, hypnosis can be a great tool. It is also good for self-improvement when you want to reduce stress or perform better at your job, and it can assist in pain management for post op, childbirth, or dental work.

While improving yourself is good, it does not achieve what meditation is supposed to do for you. The sole point of meditation is to deliver a mind dump, where you forget the problems of smoking, pain, or being overweight. Sometimes the solution is to clear out the thought, and then after meditation, you can see the situation differently.

Guided meditation might seem a little contradictory because a leader attempts to guide participants to something they feel is comforting. They are asked to feel the warmth of the sun or smell flowers on their way to a certain place. This is a use of self-hypnosis to achieve comfort so meditation can flow through.

Over the next few days I’ll be doing more post on the subject of meditation. So please keep checking back to stay current with the newest post.

Over the last few months I’ve been receiving a good amount of e-mails asking me to do more reviews. A lot of my readers have told me that the reviews have really helped them filter out the good from the bad and saved them a lot of money and time by only dealing with training material that will make them better Hypnotists.

So since you wanted more reviews I’m going to give you more reviews and I’m going to start it off with a review of Jeffrey Stephens Hypnosis Video Workshop.

Click Here To Visit Jeffrey Stephens Official Website

Let’s Get Down To The Basics

I first heard about Jeffrey Stephens through Nathan Thomas one day while him and I were on Skype masterminding our plans to take over the world. Yep, you guessed it. I watched WAY too much Pinky and the Brain growing up.

During our talk Nathan was telling me about his friend who was getting really amazing results and doing some really awesome things with hypnosis. The one thing that intrigued me the most was his claim that he could get anyone to become a non smoker within 20 min. For anyone out there who actually see’s clients you know this is a very BOLD claim. A claim so BIG and BOLD that it got the attention of Igor.

The story goes that Nathan talked to Igor about Jeffrey Stephens and then the next thing you know Jeffrey Stephens was on a plane on his way to Las Vegas to attend one of Igor’s rare live training events which was paid for by Igor. That is one hell of a first impression in my opinion.

I wonder where my first class ticket to Vegas is?

Well a few months ago Jeffrey released his first hypnosis training project which was a video recording of a hypnosis workshop he put on for a number of students. Due to being busy working on my launch of TRANCED OUT at the time I didn’t get to purchase it when it was released, but a friend of mine did and let me watch it for review purposes.

So let’s get right into the review of Jeffrey Stephens Weekend Hypnosis Workshop…

Jeffrey Stephens Weekend Hypnosis Workshop Review

This project is basically a collection of online videos which were recorded from a live event that Jeffrey put on. The video was broken up into 8 different videos with each one covering a number of different topics and subjects. Beside the videos Jeffrey also included a cool 50 page manual filled with tons of techniques and step by step instructions to help you get the most out of the training videos. Beside the videos and the manual you also get a masterclass Jeffrey did with Igor and a few other cool bonuses which you can learn about on his sales page.

BTW, This hypnosis training is completely digital just so you know. This means you get instant online access to it once you purchase it. This isn’t a physical product that is shipped to you. I just wanted to make sure I mentioned that little detail.

The Production

Now, for those of you who are into production value and enjoy movie level editing then you may be a little let down. The videos are your standard online videos and don’t have any special Hollywood qualities or effects. For the most part this is a pretty cut and dry hypnosis training course. So while the production of the videos won’t win Jeffrey any awards the content he provides is solid and to my surprise, quite unique.

The Content

The first thing you will notice is that he has a very commanding presence. There is NO doubt in my mind that Jeffrey believes himself to be the BEST hypnotist in the world. I have said this before and I’ll say it again. If you don’t have confidence you don’t have ANYTHING!

Jeffrey isn’t an academic teacher by any means, but his love and passion for this profession come through every word he speaks. He has a very laid back style and doesn’t believe in censoring himself one bit. I’m not talking about cussing or anything. I just mean he speaks his mind when he wants and doesn’t hold back just because it’s the socially accepted thing to do. He loves hypnosis, uses it all the time, attempts fun and new things with it and isn’t afraid to tell you so.

Jeffrey covers a massive amount of techniques, topics and subjects, but begins the class with a nice strong hypnotic foundation by talking about Context, Intent, Compliance and Congruity. As Jeffrey speaks on these subjects you can tell that they play a major role in the work he does and that they are the support beams of his hypnotic belief system. You’ll hear him talk about these principals throughout the entire training and with good reason.

The Intent and Context

The intent you have is your outcome, your goal. Another way to say this would be your surety of outcome or the absence of doubt. One example would be knowing 100 percent without a doubt that you are going to hypnotize this person, allow them to have a good time and exit the trance feeling great. It’s critical to know your intent before you even begin. This will serve as your subconscious guide in many ways. The context is basically anything that gets the subject mentally examining what they know about hypnosis.

These two principals set the stage in so many words and when understood properly will give you a strong hypnotic foundation. Jeffrey goes over these two principals more times then I would like, but I guess he wanted to make sure his audience/students understood how important they are for long term success.

Compliance: Are They Following Your Instructions?

Jeffrey then begins to cover the concept of compliance which is something I pay a lot of attention too when I work with people. Compliance is basically having the subject follow your instructions. This can be done in a number of different ways which he talks about on the videos. Compliance makes sure your subject is following your instructions, listening to you and also helps to build rapport. I never move on with hypnotizing anyone unless compliance is there first. From compliance Jeffrey touches on the subject of CONGRUITY.

Congruity: Do Your Words Reflect Your Actions?

A simple way to define CONGRUITY is basically when your physiology matches your spoken words. For instance, if you are speaking about confidence, but don’t stand up straight or look at your audience your may come off as not being congruence because your body doesn’t match what your saying. It’s important for your words and actions to speak the same language. Many people believe that are spoken words only make up about 7 percent of our total communication. This is a very important skill for new hypnotist to learn.

Beside those topics Jeffrey also covers subjects ranging from Instant Inductions, Super Suggestions, Complex Deepeners, Hypnotic Phenomena, Change Work, How to deal with smokers, Weight Loss, Safety and a number of other techniques which can be used for almost any situation when working with a client/subject.

Each of the different topics are covered in detail and backed up with tons of personal examples as well as detailed demonstrations of each technique on members of his audience.

Here’s a clip of Jeffrey producing the Hand Stick phenomena quickly without ANY formal induction. Remember as I’ve said before. The induction process is just a ritual…

Inside The Box or Outside The Box

Now, as I mentioned Jeffrey is quite confident in his approach and very blunt. Jeffrey let’s it be known that he does not believe in just using hypnosis in an office or a stage or on the street. Jeffrey believes that hypnosis should be used everywhere and that one of the WORST things you can do is waste a TRANCE state. I say trance state because Jeffrey does not believe Hypnosis is trance and vice versa. Jeffrey also doesn’t believe in the idea of self hypnosis. It’s outside of the box thinking like this that I enjoy. I really believe that you need to be exposed to different trains of thoughts if you want to become great at hypnosis.

Jeffrey believes that hypnosis should be fun and that your main purpose The Hypnotist is to make sure people are happy and have a good time after working with you. Overall his approach is very simple which is a nice change of pace from those out there who want to make something which is so simple so confusion and complicated.

Many of the techniques including in the course such as the “Golden Box” and the “Magic Mirror” can work with almost any type of problem your client may have. They are quick, effective and easy to remember.

My Pet Peeves With This Training

As you can tell from the review I have enjoyed this hypnosis training. I’ve taken more then one golden nugget from this course which is rare nowadays. Still, I wouldn’t feel right calling this a review unless I also listed a few of my pet peeves with this project. Please keep in mind that everyone has different taste and opinions on hypnosis trainings and the statements I’m about to make are just my own personal opinions.

I had to put that in writing so die hard Jeffrey Stephens fans don’t throw rocks at me while I walk the streets.

My biggest problem with this product is the amount of talking Jeffrey does on this course. I know, you’re thinking what the hell are you talking about Josh? Obviously Jeffrey does a lot of talking on the program as he is teaching it, but there are parts on the program where Jeffrey just seems to go off topic and takes forever to move on to the next section.

Most of these moments start off with good intentions, but eventually they just seem to become long stories which lead nowhere in my opinion. There are only a few moments like this during the entire training, but those few moments just seemed to go on forever for me. Most of these moments arrive from answering questions from students in the class and the beginning of the answer usually provides some good insight.

Still, there were times where it felt as if he answered the question pretty damn good and he should have moved on to the next section. Another example would be when someone goes off on a rant and just keeps going instead of eventually moving on.

I know some people don’t mind that type of stuff, but this was just one pet peeve for me. Don’t misunderstand me either because the majority of this program is pure content, but I had to mention it as it was just something that bothered me.

The other problem which may turn some people off is how candid Jeff is with the audience. Jeffrey loves using hypnosis and he makes no excuses for it. Some of his experiences and stories he shares may offend certain Hypnotists because Jeffery admits to using hypnosis in some very “interesting ways”. Now don’t get me wrong as he does practice safety, but just a warning for those of you who are very serious about this professional. If you are going to watch this training you NEED to keep an open mind and have a sense of humor as Jeffrey does talk about some things that are outside the box.

The Conclusion Of This Review

Overall, this is a very complete training if you’re looking to learn how to hypnotize people or just looking to add a new technique or two to your hypnotic toolbox. The videos along with the manual walks you through each step of Jeffrey’s approach. A good way to look at how this training program is set up is to think of it as a jig saw puzzle. Each piece of the puzzle is important to seeing the BIG picture. Once you take those pieces and start to put the puzzle together the picture begins to make sense and by the end you have the COMPLETE picture.

No knowledge or prior experience is needed for this training even though some prior hypnosis training won’t hurt. Jeffrey’s approach is very simple so if your looking for complex systems, deeper meanings and all that stuff then this course isn’t for you. Jeffrey has a confident style which will appeal to some and not others, but the fact remains the guy knows his stuff and everyone could take a page out of his book as far as his confidence level goes. If you are a Street Hypnotist, Stage Hypnotist or Clinical Hypnotist you’ll get something out of this course in my opinion.

Overall, I rank this training 8 out of 10. If you’re interesting in learning more about Jeffrey Stephens and his Weekend Hypnosis Workshop Training Course then click the link below. That page will also feature a couple of clips from his hypnosis training course as well.

Click Here To Learn More About Jeffrey Stephens Weekend Hypnosis Video Workshop

P.S. I didn’t really touch on the manual that Jeffrey includes with this video training course, but it’s a awesome resource. I would say about 96% of the material Jeffrey covers in the course is laid out in the manual. You’ll get step by step instructions for all the techniques he mentions in the video as well as his entire hypnotic process laid out.

So if you decide to get the course make sure you review the manual a couple of times to make sure you get the most out of it.

If you are looking toward the New Year with excitement about what seems like a perfect time for a fresh start, it’s a good idea to take this time to reflect inwardly as well.

Anyone who makes resolutions looks at increasing their success. Are there issues in your life that are preventing you from succeeding? Even if you’re functioning, there may be things going on with you that you could use help with. These things might be impacting your ability to relax, to plan, to focus and they may be plaguing your conscience as well. Hypnotherapy can help. In 2010, why not invest in yourself and your happiness? You can do so through a one on one session either in person or via phone or Skype or you could download a self help recording that helps you address one or more areas in your life.

Hypnotherapy or NLP (neuro linguistic programming) can help with many different issues. A few examples include:

Compulsive Hair Pulling

Some people who pull their hair don’t even realise they’re doing it. They’ll often do it when they’re stressed out or upset. Hypnotherapy can help you change behavioural triggers that may cause you to do this. Many people with trichotillomania are able to overcome this problem in just a few short sessions of hypnotherapy.

Phobias

Is something in your life causing you so much fear that it paralyzes you when you’re faced with it? Phobias may seem extreme to some but to the person experiencing it, the fear is all-consuming. NLP can help you change your reaction to specific scenarios so that you don’t overreact. You can find out why you’re phobic and slowly overcome the fear.

Bad Habits

A lot of our bad habits happen unconsciously, much like trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling), can happen unconsciously as a reaction. Re-training your thoughts and your behaviours can help you overcome bad habits.

Panic Attacks

It’s a stressful world out there and panic is problematic for more people than ever. Many experience panic attacks on a regular basis. What are signs of a panic attack? If you experience symptoms such as: heart palpitations, rapid breathing, shaking, and terror in certain situations, you may suffer from panic disorder. Counselling and hypnotherapy can help and it can often be overcome in just a few short sessions.

Overall Self-Improvement

Some people who seek a NLP therapist or hypnotherapist start off trying to overcome a specific fear, phobia, or behaviour and once they have success with it, they keep using it to help them with other areas in their life as well. Improve your self-confidence, be more organised, get more physically fit, overcome shyness, etc. The great thing about NLP and hypnotherapy is that you can approach it in several different ways, finding a method of treatment that suits your schedule and your lifestyle, such as: through downloadable recordings, one on one in-person counselling, or via phone or web-based therapy as well.

Learn more about what hypnotherapy and NLP can do for you at Brighton Bay Psychotherapy where we can help you with various problems, including: trichotillomania, panic attacks, phobias, and more.

We love reading about affirmations that promise to change our lives. Numerous authors have written books and generously shared the affirmations that worked for them. We devour these self-help books and become excited about the changes that can happen in our life. We dutifully follow the instructions in the book and then read or write the affirmations that appeal to us.

Here is a typical scenario: every day you wake up you read the affirmations. Every night before you go to bed you read them. You are conscientious and don’t skip a day.

But a few weeks go by and one day you wake up and notice that NOTHING has changed. You are your same old self. You have the same old job. Those same old habits control you. You notice that reading and writing those affirmations didn’t make a darn bit of difference.

WHY SHOULD I BOTHER WITH AFFIRMATIONS?

Affirmations are great. But most affirmations fail miserably. Why? Because they usually are SOMEONE else’s affirmations.

As a National Guild of Hypnotist Certified Instructor, I teach Affirmations to all of my Hypnosis Students. It’s important that every one of our clients reinforce the habit changes they desire. Clients come to us for Hypnosis and learn that Hypnosis is not a “magic pill”, though it does seem this way. Clients learn that reinforcement is a key component to personal success.

A good hypnotist does his or her job. And then you, as a client, must follow through and do your by reinforcing your desired results with a custom affirmation designed just for you.

IF IT WORKED FOR HIM, IT WILL WORK FOR ME

Affirmations are an important part of positive change. You’ll get a lot more bang for your buck if you learn how to create your own. Your personal affirmation will be accepted by your subconscious mind much more easily than someone else’s.

Take a few moments right now and quickly imagine the perfect dinner for yourself. Choose the main dish, the accompaniments, the beverage, the dessert. Take a moment and imagine it just the way you would love it to be.

Then briefly answer these questions: TRUE FALSE

1.	Is the main course appealing?
2.	Is the dessert a favorite of yours?
3.	Will you enjoy eating it?

Of course the answers to all of these questions are TRUE!

Now…imagine you are invited to a friend’s home for dinner. She has promised you an exquisite dinner with wonderful food. As you are being served you notice that it is definitely a lovely dinner. Beautifully prepared and plated in a lovely manner. Is it your perfect dinner? Probably not. But it is her perfect dinner.

When you use someone else’s affirmations, well, then it’s just like eating someone else’s perfect dinner. It may taste good. But it’s not perfect for you.

Self Hypnosis Expert Adam Eason shows us how to prepare for Self Hypnosis. Adam is considered the leader in the field of self hypnosis and teaches people all over the world the power of Self Hypnosis.

Lets Talk About Self Hypnosis

You know, when you take another person into hypnosis, there is often a good level of quality framing, expectation generation and subtle psychological processes embedded into a pre-talk… Self-hypnosis is not necessarily any different.

That said, it is hard to sneak around your own mind unknowingly, so you need to prepare for self-hypnosis and create expectation in a way that is agreeable with both levels of mind.

It is one thing teaching yourself how to use self-hypnosis, however, doing it in a way that truly effects and enhances your well-being is something else. I am going to write primarily about that period of time immediately prior to a self-hypnosis session, and ways in which you can show your mind how to prepare for self-hypnosis and be most receptive to it.

Self-hypnosis can and should be done anywhere. I have used it outside buildings before speaking events, on busy trains, during trainings, during football matches, in the middle of bedroom shenanigans and many, many other situations that you might not have thought conducive to the hypnotic process.

I am sure that you have read a book in an airport, on a plane, on a train or with other people around you and you managed to block out all other sounds and distractions and tune in to your book. I used to have a clinic in Harley Street when I first started out. It is a really busy place and my office overlooked the street with constant road works and courier motorcycles travelling up and down it, it was very noisy. However, it would not distract my clients if they were guided into hypnosis in a way in which they were able to filter out other sounds.

For some sessions however, most people find themselves a comfortable quiet place for their self-hypnosis. I would recommend this especially with your initial sessions. It may be impossible to guarantee that you won’t be disturbed, so do your best to find somewhere to be free of distractions. I even unplug the phone when I want a really nice, deep and peaceful self-hypnosis session, especially if I am using that session for a life change rather than an on the spot state change.

Once you are better and more comfortable entering hypnotic trance states, you can progress to using it in a wide variety of places regardless of distractions.

Now, when I run self-hypnosis seminars, while I am talking about the hypnotic procedure and processes involved, my students sit still and are engaged in that waking trance… Yet as soon as they are told that we are going to do some formalize hypnosis sessions, they start fidgeting, scratching, shuffling around and so on…

If you want a real, deeply profound trance experience, then it is really good to experiment with stillness… When you are deeply still, you lose your spatial awareness – that is, you are less aware of where your arms, legs and body is and that is a far more heightened sense of trance. If you sit around shuffling and scratching, you know where you are at and as such it feels much like any other time you sat in a chair with your eyes closed.

Again, in the initial sessions, I recommend having your hypnosis sessions indoors and more private. Those wonderful outdoor sessions in the sunshine will come later. The most important thing at this early, embryonic stage is that you feel comfortable and safe and are unlikely to be interrupted. This process, simply by its very nature is already showing you that you are important to you by scheduling some time to do this.

Practice is going to be what leads you to excellence with self-hypnosis; the amount of time as well as the quality of that time that you invest in your self-hypnosis is important. As you will learn, there are a lot of things to do outside of trance to enhance your self-hypnosis results.

However, the periods of time that you spend in the state of hypnosis will of course vary, there is no real optimum period of time to spend in the state. My average length of time spent in hypnosis is approximately 10-15 minutes each session. Achieving certain objectives may take longer while others are shorter. Ensure that you can keep focused for that length of time.

Many objectives may be comprehensively met with one session of hypnosis achieving the desired result. However, I have worked with many people that needed to repeat the session many times over for it to really work its way into their life. Again, be flexible and do what is best for you. Repetition is indeed a successful strategy; the more you enter self-hypnosis, the better you become at entering it. The more you focus on achieving a certain objective, the more those self-hypnosis sessions are likely to yield a successful reaching of that objective.

Prior to any hypnosis session, you want to ensure that you have an open and progressive mind with the right kind of expectation. Build in success before you start by having an expectation of success; expect it to be successful and you are opening your unconscious mind to the possibility of that happening. If you think you can’t do something you are perfectly right and you close down the opportunity to achieve that result.

When entering hypnosis, I have found that people get better results when they are seated comfortably rather than lying down. Your unconscious mind associates lying down with sleeping and you want to gain the most from your sessions. Being asleep is not conducive to making unconscious changes. Your unconscious mind especially associates your bed with sleeping, so it is really best to avoid lying down on your own bed to go into hypnosis, unless you are using your self-hypnosis to get off to sleep.

Ensure that you have your legs and arms uncrossed with your feet, ideally, flat on the floor and your hands by your sides or on your lap ensuring that they are not touching each other (your hands that is). Just ensure you are comfortable. Again, when your arms and legs are not touching each other, there is less to be aware of consciously, and enhances the ability to lose your spatial awareness.

When you are ready to begin, you then allow your eyes to be comfortably closed. You can of course use self-hypnosis with your eyes open, however, you are more likely to be distracted or disturbed and receive stimulation visually. Your unconscious mind associates having your eyes closed with being relaxed and so you can allow them to be comfortably closed.

Quieting your internal dialogue:

In preparation for a self-hypnosis session, you may want to begin quietening your mind. This is not absolutely essential; complete inner silence and peace is something Buddhist Monks take a lifetime to attain. So many people that have been on my self-hypnosis seminars or courses ask me about their internal dialogue and what to do with it. Many people say that their minds start chattering away just when they don’t want them to, especially if they have had an active or stressful day. It is also very important to be aware of internal dialogue if it is not being very nice to you.

Internal dialogue is the term for the voice(s) people speak to themselves with. Internal dialogue is often out of consciousness, but as you start to become more aware of it, it becomes much easier to hear it consciously. In some eastern traditions, internal dialogue is referred to as ‘the chattering monkey’, and years of practice are spent in meditation with the aim of getting the monkey to stop chattering. The reason for this is that they believe that internal dialogue can be a barrier to clear perception and enlightenment.

From a personal development perspective, internal dialogue is often the channel people use to ‘berate themselves’, reinforce limiting beliefs and generally stop themselves having more fun in their lives, so it’s nice to know that you can get more control over it and make it quieter before self-hypnosis begins, then you can use your internal dialogue and conscious mind to take control of the session. Please be assured that even I, with the many years of self-hypnosis experience that I have, still chatter away to myself throughout hypnosis sessions, so any quietening down is good and simply having an awareness of it can be very useful indeed. The really good news is there are ways to show you how you can do this quietening, fast.

Think About this notion for a moment; your mind and your body are one system. So, the first technique to switch off internal dialogue is one I learned a few years ago on a training course I attended. I have used it consistently ever since.

Firstly, you stick out your tongue and grasp it gently but firmly between your thumb and your forefinger. Wait a few moments as you continue to breathe. You may well become quiet inside. Simple eh? Though others may think you have gone mad.

This works on the basis that your mind and body are one system. Tiny micro-muscle movements of the tongue and the larynx accompany internal dialogue. When these movements are restricted by your thumb and forefinger, the internal voice stops. Now, I know what you’re thinking – it’s not very practical to go around with your tongue clasped between your fingers, so there is another method.

Now, if the first exercise works well for you, gently place the tip of your tongue against the roof of your mouth just behind your front teeth (continue to breathe easily.) You will stay quiet.

I use this approach when I’m doing one to one work with people in hypnotherapy or coaching for example. It allows me to quieten down on the inside so that I can put all my attention on them and what they are saying and doing. It also allows me to really watch and listen, because I’m not inside my head having conversations with myself about what I think is going on. When I catch myself talking to myself when I should be in ‘watch and listen’ mode, the mode you should be in when you begin to enter self-hypnosis too (watch and listen to yourself) I simply do the next exercise.

With a soft, gentle and patient tone, go inside and use your internal voice to say to yourself “hush” in a hushed tone, like you would if you were soothing a little baby. Allow yourself to smile on the inside, or at least imagine that you have a smile on your face and really feel a sense of patience with your internal dialogue. It may take up to a minute before you go quieter inside. Remember, you do not have to completely silence yourself, just settle yourself down on the inside.

The next approach is one of the first interventions I ever learned, and is incredibly simple. Go inside your mind and imagine that you have the volume control for internal dialogue (usually either a dial or a slider.) If you can’t find one, just imagine one – it will work just as well for our purposes. Now turn the volume control up and hear or imagine the dialogue get louder. Then, of course, turn it down and hear it get quieter. Then turn it all the way off. Nice and quiet. Zip.

There are lots of other approaches. No one approach works for everybody, but each of these approaches will work for some people. Practice when you are relatively relaxed and have some time, and you will find the ones that work best for you. As you begin to get into the habit of using them systematically and consistently, you will really start to reap the benefits and be priming yourself for your self-hypnosis even better.

Your Breathing:

Now, because we spend our entire lifetimes breathing, many people take it for granted and we all just assume that we are doing it correctly. There are of course many ways of breathing and different types of breathing. Hard and fast breathing forces us to inhale deeply and quickly so that we can rapidly restore consumed oxygen and expel carbon dioxide; the waste product of our exertions. This kind of breathing is mostly noted when we exercise or partake in rigorous exercise. There is another kind of deep breathing and that is the deep breathing of relaxation, which is slower and occurs when we rest or are not partaking in physical exertion.

Your usual, every day breathing rate is likely to be shallow and rapid as with most people. It usually involves the chest expanding and moving outwards, however, the chest and ribs do not really have a vast amount of capacity to stretch and expand. As a pre-cursor to self-hypnosis and as part of any healthy routine, deep breathing originating from the diaphragm region is healthier and comes right from the abdomen. A good way to get used to this is to push your tummy outward when you inhale and imagine that you are breathing from that area just beneath your belly button. This area is known as the Hara in many eastern health practices. Below your lungs is a large and wide membrane called your diaphragm. As you allow your abdominal muscles to pull the membrane downwards, your lungs draw in more air to fill that space.

I can remember being at school during sports practice and being told my physical education teacher to thrown my shoulders back and breath deeply from the chest and keeping my stomach flat, military style. This was not good advice. It may look good, however it limits your breathing capacity. Practice slow, deep breaths from your lower tummy area, push your tummy out when you inhale, regardless of how it looks and notice the difference in your breathing.

Renowned cardiologist Dr Herbert Benson (1976) coined the term “relaxation response” for the response that our body has to this deeper breathing as the deeper breathing triggered a series of reactions in the body to stimulate the body’s parasympathetic nervous system and instigate relaxation. This is the opposite to that well-documented “flight or fight response” which is that rush of nerves and adrenalin when our body prepares to fight or flight in response to anger, stress, anxiety or fright. When you consciously reproduce one part of the relaxation response, by breathing deeply from the tummy, the body notices and responds with more additional agreeable, relaxing physiological changes such as slower heart rate and increased blood flow to all parts of the body. This is a wonderful state to be in and to begin to instigate when entering self-hypnosis and can contribute to it being a better overall experience.

Sounds simple doesn’t it? Asking you to breathe properly. Breathing; we all have to do it. Just how aware are we of our breathing and the effect it has on how we live our life? Even when not used a precursor to self-hypnosis.

So, to get into the idea of understanding your breathing and how it affects you and your life, physiology and your psychological state. Here are several exercises for you to heighten your awareness of your breathing and subsequently enhance your ability to get into a state that optimises your experience of self-hypnosis.

Firstly, when you are experiencing a powerful, positive state in your life, this can be anything or anytime when you are positive and happy, then allow yourself to become aware of your breathing rate. Pay particular attention to the timing and rhythm of your in-breath and out-breath.

Second of all, next time you are in a neutral or negative state, start breathing at the rate and rhythm from the first part of this exercise, and usually, within a minute or so, the positive state should begin to return.

Many gurus advise people to do breathing exercises regularly. I know Tony Robbins does in his book “Unlimited Power” he advises that you start each day with a breathing exercise of inhaling slowly and deeply, then holding it for twice as long as the inhalation and exhaling in a controlled manner in twice the time as the inhalation. It really is invigorating and a great way to get motivated at the start of the day, especially if you are looking to do some things with your day that require motivation.

Breathing is powerful, our life force, and is a major factor influencing our state of mind (if you are uncertain about this, hold your breath for two minutes and re-read this sentence). This being the case, please use your common sense when doing any of these exercises (if you have a respiratory condition, please check with your health advisor first.) I do not want any asthmatics complaining that they did themselves harm following the exercises given here!!

So, thirdly, start breathing comfortably but deeply, in through your nose and out through your mouth. Imagine that you are breathing from that area of your abdomen just beneath your belly button that I mentioned earlier. Make the in-breath last to a count of 5 and the out-breath to a count of 6. Continue for at least 2 minutes, and notice what happens.

These techniques can be very powerfully utilised when wanting to get in control of your state if you are going through a period of change such as reducing your weight, stopping smoking or developing more confidence. Tune in to the way that your breathing affects you and begin to use it to settle yourself and create a nice state to proceed into your self-hypnosis session.

Please remember that most people don’t breathe nearly enough. Start to breathe more deeply and notice how much better you feel. Have lots of fun with this. Notice how good you can make yourself feel when you breathe differently and how comfortable you can be as you prepare for self-hypnosis.

Engage in the Moment:

In preparation for getting into self-hypnosis, people often comment to me that they spend lots of time thinking about the past or what might happen in the future. These are fine in the correct context. To get yourself into a good state of self-hypnosis, something that can enhance it further is to really engage in that moment. Feedback to yourself what you are experiencing at the moment. It might sound strange; however, see what happens when you tell yourself what it is that you are experiencing. You can just do it in your own head, as you are settling, breathing, beginning to relax, just engage in the moment.

Being engaged in the moment does not have to be exclusive to the time immediately prior to a self-hypnosis session; it can also enhance your business and life experience in general.

I spend lots of time working with individuals, corporations and businesses to get them engaged in the present moment. The centre that I used to own and run here in Bournemouth on the south coast used to sell a wide range of books and one that I used to stock was a book called “The Power of Now” by a man called Eckhart Tolle. Lots of people that came to classes, workshops and consultations at the centre would often tell me how great it was and give me snippets of information about its content and for a number of years I would occasionally think “Yeah, I really should read that book” then kept on deciding that I would wait until later (yes, I am fully aware of the irony in this!) Nevertheless, I am already sold on the power of the present moment, for a number of reasons.

You see when you really think about it, only this present moment exists. I think this is by far the most fascinating reason to put your attention on the present moment. Yesterday only exists as a memory, with all the unreliability we know to be true of memories; when you experienced yesterday, it was now. Tomorrow does not exist either, except in your imagination; when you experience tomorrow, it will be now. it.

A great way to engage more in this moment is to begin in this comfortable, aligned position (spine straight, hands on your thighs or at your sides, breathing comfortably.) With your eyes open or closed, allow yourself to become aware of the different sounds, sights, smells and sensations around you. Welcome, this is the present moment.

This is the present moment, and there are a number of good reasons for keeping your awareness in the present as much as possible especially with regards to the state you want to be in when you enter self-hypnosis. Again, this is not essential, just something else to enhance your experience of self-hypnosis. What’s more, I am just referring to the time immediately prior to and at the beginning of your self-hypnosis session; there may well be times during your hypnosis when you might want to reflect on the past or imagine the future; engaging in the moment as I am explaining it now is for getting into a good, receptive state at the beginning of a session.

Another great reason for encouraging you to engage in the moment more is that there is a whole lot more of it (“it” being “now”) in store for you. If you stop for a moment, you will realise that all the experiences of your life will take place in a present moment. The more comfortable you are with the present moment, the more comfortable you are sure to be with those future presents.

Also remember that the present is where you are. If in doubt, look at your hands. Your hands only exist in the present moment. Rub your fingers together, feel how it feels to be in this moment. Because this moment is where your hands (along with the rest of your body) are located.

In addition, the present is the only time you can take action. You can wish you took action yesterday, but yesterday no longer exists, so it will remain a wish. You can plan to take action in the future, but when you take the action, it will be in the present moment. The only time you can take action is in this very moment.

I took some amazing insight from my running experiences with my younger brother Ben. When we ran and trained together and competed in races, he always enjoyed the race and commented on our surroundings whereas I always had my eye on the finish line. So much can and has been said about enjoying and engaging in the journey rather than always focusing on the future. My running experiences became much more enjoyable when I concentrated more on the experience rather than the end result all the time.

Life and work today seem to operate at a faster and faster pace. People have lots of demands on their time, and need every advantage they can get to be more effective. When I do corporate and business consultancy, one of the most common ‘challenges’ that people want to deal with is being focused and making progress on important business objectives or life goals.

As I have investigated more and more how people avoid being focused, I have found that, they are often not centred in the present. Instead, they are thinking about what is happening tomorrow, or what happened yesterday, or running through a list of things that they need to do later. As a result, their attention is not in the present.

I used to work in Victoria in Central London and if you have ever been there during the rush hours it is a hectic place. What I find interesting is that you can tell who is engaged in the moment and who is thinking about their day or the next day. Those people whose awareness is within their heads, mulling over their day or dreading what’s in store tomorrow are the ones bumping into people or veering off in wrong directions. Whereas those people whose awareness is outside their heads and engaged in their surroundings are those that are balanced, poised and agile, like a panther!

When you bring your attention and your energy into the present moment, you can accomplish things more quickly, solve problems more effectively, and enjoy the process more than you might expect. So, have a go at connecting with the moment more and more in your days and especially during that time immediately prior to your self-hypnosis sessions.

You can even stop just before starting an important task, and take a moment to centre your self and relax. Then, get clear about what you want to accomplish, and then begin. Do this prior to your self-hypnosis session for more clarity about what you want to achieve from that session.

At my website you can download a free self-hypnosis session to help you practice getting into that state… Using the afore mentioned preparation first of course…

Have fun, enjoy it.

Do you want to know how to become THE BEST at whatever you do? Board Certified Hypnotist John Weir discusses a technique that his father installed in him at a early age, which led him to be quite successful at the age of 27.

Champions Are Made When Nobody Is Around

Champions are made when nobody is around,” are words of wisdom from my past that perpetually roll around in my mind.

My father constantly told me they these powerful words as he instilled the belief in me that in order to be at your best you must do the things champions do in the off time, when nobody is around, in order to perform your best in front of the crowd.

My father taught me many lessons while coaching me in sports and little did I know that some of these lessons would have such an incredible impact on my professional and personal development.

Success isn’t an overnight phenomenon or something that just happens to some lucky people. People who achieve a high level of success are the ones willing to do the necessary activities in their downtown so when the time is right they are prepared to succeed. Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and all other sports legends didn’t get to that position without putting in a tremendous amount of time practicing their skills. Zig Ziglar, Anthony Robbins, and all the other great motivational speakers just don’t go and wing it hoping to deliver a great lecture. Ormond McGill, Gerald Kein, and all the other legendary hypnotists never woke one day with hypnotic powers nor were they born hypnotists. All of these greats lived by the philosophy that my father preached to me as a child. They became the best in their fields because of what they did when nobody was around.

The End Is Just The Beginning

In order to be a successful hypnotist you must commit yourself to a lifetime of learning and constant development. There is a direct correlation in the activities you do in your off time and your ability to achieve success with your clients. During your downtime, you must spend it developing and sharpening your skills so you can be as effective as possible. I tell all of my students, at the end of their certification course, that this isn’t the end it’s only the beginning. Every single day there are new developments in our profession, people developing new techniques, and new ways are discovered to maximize our potential with our clients. The best in our profession are well aware of this fact and spend lots of time reading books, trade journals, and website forums so that they stay up to date with a profession that is constantly growing.

A success deficiency that many people possess is that they wait until they landed a big gig before they start developing the program for it. Successful people do the opposite. The major successes in our profession are always in their lab during their off time developing new programs, products, scripts, and courses. They always think in terms of “when” they get the big jobs and never “if” they do. This attitude keeps their motivation levels high and in the spirit of constant development. When a person combines practice, preparation, and action with opportunity it creates massive success.

Learning Hypnosis Never Stops

It is amazing just how many familiar faces there are at all the major conventions, advanced training programs, and lectures. When these people aren’t at the conventions, you constantly hear them on tele-seminars, or see them logged-on video conferences yearning to learn more. This isn’t by accident. The same way their success isn’t a mistake either. They are constantly learning doing the things that nobody sees.

To be the best you can be, commit yourself to constantly develop your skills and expand your knowledge everyday just like the best in our industry do. So the ultimate question is.what are you doing when nobody is around?

Yours Truly in Success,

Most people think they know what Hypnosis Is, but the truth is that most people don't have a clue.

The average person doesn't understand hypnosis which makes it almost impossible for them to know what hypnosis is or when it's happening. People would love to think they can't be hypnotized, but what if I were to tell you everyone on this planet has been hypnotized at some point or another. Would you believe me?

The word "Hypnosis" is just a word someone gave to a process that has been around since the start of time. So follow me as I show you how Hypnosis is all around us and how you HAVE been hypnotized before...

I’ve Never Been Hypnotized Before..Have I?

As a hypnotist one of the main questions I always ask people is have you been hypnotized before? The majority of people usually answer this question with a simple “no”. Once in a while I will meet someone who says they have been hypnotized, but that’s pretty rare here in Columbus. So let’s discuss this on this Hypnosis Blog.

When I hear someone say they haven’t been hypnotized before I think to myself this is great! I have a chance to educate someone on hypnosis and maybe, just maybe change the way someone views this wonderful profession. To me it’s the law of compounding. One person tells one person and another person tells two people and so on.

The fact is that most of the people on this planet have been hypnotized or been in hypnosis. Now you may be reading this saying I think I would know if I’ve been hypnotized before. I have never been to a hypnotist. My answer back to all of you saying that is if you have never been hypnotized before, then how do you know what hypnosis is?

What Is Hypnosis?

This answer usually has people scratching their heads a little and this is where I grab their attention. Many people think hypnosis is where a hypnotist yells “SLEEP”! On stage and they see a person drop into what the audience perceives as sleep. The fact of the matter is that what you have just seen is nothing more then a ritual some hypnotists perform to demonstrate to the public a physical or mental change that has happened. This is what we call an induction.

We can actually see a person go from being alert to a relaxed state in a matter of seconds. They are not asleep, just in a very focused, relaxed and heighten state. This ritual helps to convince people that something has just taken place. Still what the hypnotist just did isn’t hypnosis, it’s nothing more then an induction, which leads to hypnosis. Hypnosis is the state that the person is in after the induction is performed.

So now that a person is in hypnosis, what does it feel like? The only way to tell if you have been in hypnosis is to have something to compare it too, especially if you don’t know anything about how hypnosis feels. Understand that hypnosis isn’t magic or some special powers we process. Hypnosis is a natural process. Yes, you heard me correctly hypnosis is a natural process.

Hypnosis is Within Our DNA?

The majority of humans excluding a few certain situations are born with the ability to enter hypnosis. All hypnosis is Self Hypnosis. Plus, most of us stay in a continuing state of hypnosis until we are about 4,5,6 or 7 depending on the mature rate of the child. All I do as a hypnotist is help to facilitate the process for you. Think of it as lacing up your shoes. We all have the ability to do this, but until someone teaches us we can tie our shoes we just don’t know how too. In other words most of us enter into certain forms of hypnosis unconsciously, but we are born with the ability to bring hypnosis on consciously.

In a second I’m going to write a list here and if you have ever done one of them then you have been in hypnosis. Some of you may not believe me, but you don’t have too. That’s the great thing about being human we have a choice. Still, you would seek out the knowledge of a medical doctor when sick because they are trained in their field. You have recognized that they have some knowledge you don’t about your illness. Think of a hypnotist in the same degree. We are trained in the art of hypnotism, thus we have some knowledge about this field you don’t. So just keep this in mind when reading the list below.

Have You Been Hypnotized Before?

Have you ever been driving on the highway and “zoned out”, then the next moment you notice you have come to your exit or destination? If so, then you have just experienced a form of hypnosis.

Have you ever been to see a movie? As your watching the movie you are in a state of hypnosis.

Have you ever cried during a movie? If so, then you have been in hypnosis

Have you ever been watching a TV show or Sports game and you don’t hear someone calling your name because you’re so involved in the show or game? If so, then you have been in hypnosis.

Have you ever been involved in a real good book? If so, then you have been in hypnosis?

Have you ever been to a church? The moment you step into a church you are in hypnosis. Most churches don’t realize they are even using hypnosis, but they are.

Have you ever been at school or at work and started daydreaming? If so, you have been in hypnosis.

Have you ever gotten so mad at someone that you started to yell at them and said things you wish you hadn’t? If so, then you have been in hypnosis.

Have you ever been in love? If so, then you have been in hypnosis.

If you have experienced any of the above items, then you have been in hypnosis. Hypnosis is nothing more then when your judgmental mind steps aside. The moment you suspend judgment you have hypnosis. We call this the suspension of the Critical Factor. The Critical Factor is the part of your mind that determines weather new suggestions are accepted or rejected. As long as the critical factor is active, it will reject any suggestion that doesn’t match with your current believe system.

Hypnosis is all around you and now you have the ability to spot it. Marketing executives use it all the time when designing TV ads. They know exactly how to bypass this critical factor using sounds, words and images.

I know some of you are looking at this list and saying, but I wasn’t asleep! Once again hypnosis isn’t sleep. While in hypnosis you can hear everything going on. You can come out of it at any time. You can be in hypnosis with eyes open. You will not do anything against your morals or ethics. Hypnosis is just a state of mind we all enter through the day. It is normal and it’s completely safe.

In Conclusion

So take some time and think about this before you judge something you know nothing about. Hypnosis can be a wonderful tool to create some fantastic changes in your life.
P.S.

Recently I’ve been watching Jeffrey Stephens Hypnosis Video Program and I have to say it’s one of the most interested training programs I’ve watched lately. On one of his videos he talks about how hypnosis isn’t something we do, but something we all experience. It’s an interesting statement that got me thinking about hypnosis.

His view is that Hypnosis is the natural state and Hypnotist just know how to utilize that state. If that is the case then everyone has been hypnotized before before hypnosis is the state we’re always in. I don’t know, just a strange random thought I just had. Maybe I’ll do a post on this thought later.
