Why Every Hypnotist Needs To Be Using Twitter

For those of you who don’t know my background is actually in business, marketing, management and all that good stuff. I love being able to take the knowledge from those fields and apply them to my other love, which is hypnosis. I’ve always believed that the major downfall of our profession is the lack of hypnotists who understand business or marketing.

For some reason many hypnotists have this image of money being bad. This mindset actually keeps them from being wealthy or successful. So many hypnotists just open the doors to their practice, but never stop and think about the following items:

  • Credibility and how everything we do impacts the way we people see us
  • Marketing and how to use that marketing in a credible and creative manner
  • Thinking outside the box
  • How to get people in the door
  • Using the internet to supercharge your business or practice

The simple truth of the matter is if you can’t keep your doors open for business then you won’t be helping as many people as you could with your skills as a hypnotist. The Hypnosis business has so much potential for our profession, but hypnotists need to change the way they view their business and how they view themselves.

So over the next couple of weeks I’m going to focus on a number of different business and marketing relating post. The topics will range from how to use Facebook, Twitter, Press Releases and much more. So with all of that being said today’s blog post is going to be all about the social media giant named Twitter.

You may think it’s nonsense or just something teenagers use to waste time, but in reality it’s one of the most powerful marketing tools at your disposal and it’s completely free. It’s a long article so pace yourself if possible. Hopefully by the end of this article you’ll understand what Twitter is, how to use it and why you should be using it?

What Exactly Is Twitter?

So, I’m sure you heard about this social media giant called Twitter. Even if you don’t know about Twitter I’m sure you’ve heard about it or seen it mention on television. It seems like everyone is using Twitter nowadays or talking about Twitter.

Either way, I’m going to take a giant leap here and assume a good potion of my readers have heard about this powerful tool, but just aren’t sure exactly what it is and whyTwitter can be an important tool for your hypnosis business.

Twitter is a social media website that allows people to micro blog about anything in their life. Micro-blogging is just like blogging, but you’re limited to a certain number of characters per post. In the case of Twitter you’re only allowed 140 characters. You can post as much as you want, but you’ll have to fit what you want to say within 140 characters.

I know, your thinking how can I express what I really want to say in only 140 characters? Trust me, I had the same problem when I started using the service. Micro-blogging makes it where you have to get really specific and clear about what you want to say.

It limits the conversation to the “real” meat of the convo in many ways. Another way to think of the service is like a mini text message. The only difference is it’s the entire world in one big group chat. So to recap Twitter is a service that let’s you interact with other people using only 140 characters for each “tweet“. In case you’re wondering a “tweet” is just the lingo people use for the message you send to someone.

Twitter is considered a form of Social media, which I’m sure you heard before. Social media is just another name for websites or tools that allow you to reach people in a social type of manner.

Examples of social media would be Youtube, Facebook and etc. Smart marketers know how to leverage these internet based tools to enhance their business, credibility and image. Eventually, you’ll be able to do that too with my help but just keep reading first.

How Does Twitter Work Exactly

So how does Twitter help me as a hypnotist to promote my business? That’s a fair question and easy to answer. It allows you to connect with people all over the world. Twitter is like having a virtual business card which you can hand to people in other states and counties without leaving your home or spending money on business cards. It allows you to reach people you wouldn’t be able to otherwise.

Before I explain how to use it to expand your business/brand or promote your website or service I think it’s important for you to know a little bit about the basics of Twitter. So let’s take a look at some of the different “core” features.

Following Other People on Twitter

When you join Twitter and run through the usual setup you’ll have the option to follow people.

Following just means you find what a person says interesting and you want to follow what they say on Twitter. So let’s say you follow me on twitter. This is the link which will lead you to my Twitter profile: http://twitter.com/JoshuaHoughton

Typically people will post a link to their profile or a social media icon which links to their profile. So if you wanted to follow them it’s as easy as clicking the link or the button and you’ll be redirected to the person’s twitter profile and when you arrive on the profile you’ll see a follow button. You just click that button and now you’ll following them.

(You can see the “Follow” button in the photo below near the right of the image)

Twitter

Another way you can find people to follow is by using the “search” function on Twitter or a number of Twitter Directoies which allow you to find people to follow. I’ll mention more about these “directories” a little later.

Btw, it’s not just about following people you find interesting, but you can also follow people who share the same interest, hobbies or activities as you. This makes Twitter a powerful marketing tool because you can easily follow people interested in hypnosis or other hypnosis related activities.

(I just typed “hypnosis” into the Twitter search area and it brings back people related to hypnosis)

What Happens Now That You Followed Someone

So what happens then is once you follow me you’ll be able to see every “tweet” I write and post on your home screen for Twitter. Keep in mind you’ll also see tweets from everyone else you follow as well. Tweets can vary quite a lot depending on what the person feels like tweeting about. Some people may “tweet” personal stuff. Some people may “tweet” about business related stuff. Some people just “Tweet” random stuff that makes no sense lol.

Twitter can be quite entertaining sometime, but it’s pretty useful because “tweets” are in real time. So someone may tweet about a news event taking place right now or a TV show or movie or etc. Twitter is like the subconscious mind of the internet in many ways.

(You can see “Tweets” of different people I follow below)

Twitter Home Screen

How To Reply To Someone

Now let’s say you want to reply to what someone said because you thought it was interesting or helpful or for whatever reason. All you have to do is click on the reply symbol on their tweet and type your messsage. That is the easiest way in my opinion.

You can also mention someone in your tweet by using the “@” symbol. I’m sure you’ve seen this symbol a lot if you’ve ever been on Twitter and it’s pretty simple. @ just means “at” someone so basically it’s shortcode for I want to talk to this person. You don’t really need to use @ symbol if you’re just hitting the reply button, but let’s say you’re typing a tweet and want to tell me how much you enjoy Whats On My Brain.

You would go to your “compose tweet” area and type the following message:

@Joshuahoughton I love your website and find it very useful. I just wanted to let you know.

Okay so let’s break this message down step by step. @Joshuahoughton is letting the Twitter system know you want to talk to me because my username is “joshuahoughton” So to speak to any user you just use the @ symbol then type their username and then type your message and hit send.

Twitter will notify me that someone has “mentioned me” and will allow me to reply back if I want too. So this is basically how you mention someone or reply to someone on Twitter.

(An example of me tweeting my friend and business partner Matt Sison)

What Is A Retweet

This is pretty simple. When someone retweet’s something it means they like it or find it interesting and want to share it with their audience. So when you hit the retweet button that person’s tweet will not appear on your timeline. So think of a retweet as sharing a tweet you like, find interesting or enjoy with your audience.

Are They Following Me Back

Now just because you follow someone on Twitter doesn’t mean they will follow you back. It doesn’t mean they don’t like you or anything, but some people only want to follow people they want to follow. If you follow someone and they follow you back you have now gained a follower.

For some reason people on Twitter believe that if they have a lot of people following them, but they don’t follow anyone back that it makes them popular. I tend to think it’s a silly idea really. I try to not get caught up in the number game too much, but at the core the more people who follow you, the bigger your audience and reach.

(What it looks like when someone follows you back. As you can see Cal follows me & I follow him)

Cal

Celebrities will rarely follow you back, but I’ve found that people will common interest and hobbies will usually find you back if they find what you tweet out interesting. Don’t worry if people don’t follow back in the beginning. Keep tweeting and seeking out like minded people and you’ll eventually start to gain an audience.

So if you’re trying to use Twitter to expand your business then the goal should be as I mentioned above. To seek out people who may be interested in hypnosis or other hypnosis and mind related subjects

What Is A DM (Direct Message)

A DM aka direct message is exactly as it sounds. It’s a direct message to another user. This feature is used when you don’t want your conversation to appear on your Twitter timeline because remember above I mentioned anything you tweet and any mentions will appear on your timeline where everyone can see.

So if you want something to be private then using the Direct Message feature is going to be your friend. You can only use this feature if the person you’re sending a DM too is following you back as well. So in other words if the person you want to chat with in a DM isn’t following you back then you can’t DM them. This makes sense because Twitter doesn’t want random people just spamming your Direct Mail inbox.

Congrautations! You now have a basic knowledge of Twitter. There are a few more features, but those can be learned as you mess with the service. The one’s I’ve outlined above are the “core” of the Twitter system and what you really to need to know.

Why Twitter Is So Powerful

So now that you know the basics let me show you why Twitter is so powerful. Let’s say you follow me and let’s say I have 500 people who follow me. Well, if you follow me and I choose to follow you then everything you say will show up on my twitter home page as I mentioned earlier. The reason is because I followed you so it’s showing up on my page.

So if you respond to something I say or I respond to something you say all the people who follow me will be able to click on that conversation and see what you have to say. It’s almost like a viral effect. This is called leveraging. You just followed one person, which was me, but in exchange 500 people may possibly be exposed to what you have to say. That is leveraging and marketing at its best.

So let’s take it a step further.

Let’s say you wrote a really great article about Hypnotism on your blog or you ran across an interesting article on a blog and you want to share it with the people who are following you. You would tweet it, which just means you type it in the box and hit send as long as it’s 140 characters or less. When you do this everyone who follows you will see it.

Now, let’s say I follow you and I receive the link to this really cool article on Hypnotism. Well, I may decide to retweet it which means I would let everyone who follows me know about the article. Then, let’s say someone who follows me likes it. They may decide to let people who follow them know about it. Before you know it thousands of people have seen what you have to say or whatever it is you choose to tweet about.

I like to think of it as a row of dominos. As one domino is knocked down it can affect a lot more dominos depending on where there placed. I remember one time on Twitter I posted an article I wrote and some people who followed me found it interested. Well, one of the people who followed me had a following of 300 people and so they posted it where all of them could see and so on and so on.

Now just imagine if you created a new hypnosis product or hypnosis training. When you started no one knew about, but after a few tweets it’s possible that 100’s may find out about it. Keep in mind that I said “possible” because there is never any guarantee’s in marketing, but it’s better to attempt something then do nothing at all right?

Now, just because 600 or 900 people may follow someone and retweet what you have to say doesn’t mean everyone will follow you back, but the chances are really in your favor. I’ll talk more later about how to increase your tweeter conversion.

So this is why Twitter is such a powerful tool. Your words or what you have to say reach people in a way you never could. You’re able to possibly reach thousands of people in just seconds if done right. So let’s say you have created a new product or opened a new business, created a free hypnosis mp3 or e-book you want to share with people.

Then you could use Twitter to spread the word. Now, I’m not saying you should just use Twitter to promote what you are doing as that could hurt you in time. There is a correct way to do it which I’ll get into in a moment.

Who Should I Follow?

I mentioned this briefly in some of the paragraphs above, but let’s dive a little bit deeper shall we?

Now, you’re asking me who should I follow? Well, you should follow people you find interesting or what they have to say interesting. People who tweet stuff you can use or what to know more about!

For instance, I’m into business, marketing and hypnosis so I locate people interested in the same stuff I am and follow them. You always hope the person follows you back, but that isn’t always the case. You can find people with like interest using many different tools. One way is to look at the person’s profile.

Twitter allows every user to create a profile which let’s you tell people a little about you and a link to your website. Mine mentions I’m a hypnotist and links back to this blog. So anyone who would happen to run across my profile can read it and see if I’m into the same stuff them as them. Heck, just the fact that you can place your website on a site that has millions of users is powerful!

(An example of my profile)

twitter profile

Tons of other people do this as well. So if you’re into the hypnosis world check out some hypnosis blogs or websites and I’m sure you’ll find some people you know or want to know on Twitter. Another good one to locate people is to look through my list of people following me. That is a great way to find people to follow. You have to figure that the majority of people following me find hypnosis interesting in some type of way so it’s a good chance you’ll find some people to follow.

I use a service that is located off of Twitter to find people with similar interest and that site is listed below:

  • Twellow.com – A search directory & yellow pages for Twitter

This is one of the best resources to locate people in my opinion. If you’re interested in Hypnosis you would type the keyword hypnosis in and then it would send you back results for everyone on Twitter who has the word “hypnosis” in their profile or in their tweets. As I mentioned earlier you get to have a small profile where you can tell a little about yourself and a link to a website or two.

So I may look at a few of the people the results shoot back and read some of their tweets. If I find them interesting then I’ll follow them. I tend to use twitter for both networking and business so I follow people in the hypnotism field so I can help spread word about my blog and also network with other like minded people. I kill two birds with one stone (I would never kill a bird in real life) 🙂

What Should I Say On Twitter?

Well, that is really up to you isn’t it? Think of Twitter as an online party with tons of different conversations going on. Some people are talking about their professions and some people are talking about their day or a new girl they met or whatever is going on in their life. Some people post links to interesting articles so it can be shared with others. Some people post information about their business. Some people promote their websites or services.  (hint, hint) It’s really up to you.

Me, I like to post about what’s new in my profession, my life, my business, projects I’m working on and a lot more. Sometimes if I run across a great article I’ll post it for everyone else to read. If I create a really good blog post or review I’ll post it to get more traffic. I try to provide VALUE to the people who follow me.  If I want to become more known in a certain niche or market then I use it to network.

Since my goal is to spread the word about this blog I will use Twitter to drive people here to learn more about me, what I do, my services and etc. So see, if you’re a smart hypnotist you’ll find a way to use twitter to enhance your business or image. Once again, think of Twitter as a party and eventually when you get to know people well you can invite them to your home, which is your blog or website where they can learn even more about you.

The Proper Way To Use Twitter

Now, one of the quickest ways to lose followers or not gain any followers is to constantly talk about yourself or spam people with links that are all about you. Remember I said earlier that Twitter is a form of social media. Twitter is about people at the core and you need to learn to connect with people.

While you may use Twitter for networking or business remember that at the end of the day it’s about connecting with other people who have similar interest or you find interesting.

Remember, I like to think of Twitter as a party. No one likes the person at the party who only talks about himself. The most popular person at most parties is the person who is involved with other people, smiling, having fun, cracking jokes, asking other people how things went and every once in a while talking about themselves.

If I do offer a product or something for free like an mp3 or blog post I make sure it provide values. I also don’t keep posting it over and over so more people can see it. That will leave a bad taste in the mouths of others.  Just remember at the core of Twitter is people. I’m not saying you shouldn’t promote products, business or whatever, but just use common sense with how you put yourself out there.
