I’m at home just trying to relax after a pretty rough day. It was my birthday today so I had to do the whole party thing with my family and my in-laws which was fun, but it wears you out. I guess too much cake and ice cream will do it to you as well.
Well, one way I relax when I’m not working on projects, studying, blogging or many of the other things I do is watching TV. Now, I’m not a couch potato by any means, but I do have a few shows I enjoy watching from time to time and one of my newest is Warehouse 13 which airs on the Sci-Fi Channel. I’m into stuff like the x-files, Eureka and other such shows so Warehouse 13 is right up my alley.
It’s basically about two secret service agents who couldn’t be more different that get recruited into a top secret program called Warehouse 13. The warehouse basically stores items of a strange and mysterious nature. This isn’t a review so I won’t go into full detail, but I highly recommend the show as it has a pretty interesting story, good acting and a lot of humor.
Now, I won’t spoil all the details of the show, but tonight’s episode had to deal with something close to my heart, Hypnosis. I would have never guessed Hypnosis would be mentioned in this episode as I just didn’t see how it was connected to the episode until they revealed the connection. I get a trip out of seeing or hearing hypnosis being mentioned in the media. I guess I like to see if it’s fact or fiction since most of the time when Hypnosis is mentioned it’s fiction. Plus, as a Hypnotist I enjoy seeing my profession mentioned to some degree on a major TV show.
The biggest problem I have with Hypnosis being mentioned in the media is that it’s never really talked about in positive light. In other words, Hypnosis combined with TV usually equals nothing more but myths and information that just isn’t true at all. I know Hollywood has to entertain the audience and create stories that do just that, but I would just love if Hypnosis wasn’t portrayed the way it was in the media. I’m serious, I would love to turn on an episode of one of my favorite television shows and see Hypnosis actually portrayed in a positive and correct light.
It’s hard enough for Hypnotists and our profession due to the already heavy amount of myths that exist within the general public, but now we have to fight even harder as people watch these shows and get the wrong idea about hypnosis. Now, don’t get me wrong because Hypnosis has come a long, long way and science is finally starting to catch up to our profession. The things we have been saying about our profession are finally being backed up by science and modern technology and that is really exciting for our profession in my opinion.
So what happened on the show you ask? Basically people in a small town located somewhere in Colorado were acting really odd. Basically people were acting out their subconscious desires without knowing it. It’s as if they were being controlled by someone and had no clue as to what they were doing. The cause was a certain item which belong to someone most Hypnotists know, James Braid.
For those of you who don’t know James Braid basically named our profession. That is the short history basically and I won’t say what the item is as I don’t want to spoil that surprise. If this information happens to spoil the show for you I’m sorry, but I don’t think the information I mentioned will spoil it for viewers of the show. People were running around the town shooting, slapping and beating up each other and the show implied that Hypnosis, well actually Hypnotherapy was involved in someway. I’ll let you watch it to find out how.
So while Hypnosis does work with the subconscious mind it’s not going to have people running around town shooting and slapping people. I know it’s just television and to be honest I have seen hypnosis displayed to the public in much worst situations, but either way it’s possible for people to get the wrong idea. So for anyone reading this post please know that Hypnosis won’t release your subconscious desires. Heck, you can’t even be made to tell the truth under hypnosis and it’s not some form of mind control.
Hypnosis is a natural process which is nothing more then you relaxing your mind and focusing on specific goals or a specific outcome. We as Hypnotists just help to guide you through this process as all hypnosis is nothing more then Self Hypnosis in my opinion. It’s completely harmless and natural and I promise you won’t act out your inner desires. Stage Hypnosis doesn’t either and just because it looks like it does doesn’t mean what you see is what you see. In other words, more goes than what you see during a stage hypnosis show as well.
We are not mindless zombies what we watch and listen to still influences the way we perceive certain things and Hypnosis is no different. So I guess I just wanted to make sure a little truth was brought to the surface just in case anyone watching the show had any questions. I still enjoyed the episode and will continue to watch the show and I enjoy the fact that Hypnosis is getting more exposure in primetime. The show deals with the odd and strange and it some ways hypnosis may seem odd and strange to someone who knows nothing about the subject. If I’m being honest Hypnosis is still a mystery to most Hypnotists to some degree.
Now I really thought it was interesting that they mentioned James Braid. He is rarely known by people outside the world of Hypnotism so my hats off to the writers for at least doing some research. I have seen some shows that used Hypnosis and I just wanted to change the channel as they make our profession look like some form of mystic magic which is so far from the truth.
I just thought it was interesting that the show Warehouse 13 mentioned Hypnosis and used it as the main villain of sorts for this episode. No real lesson here as this post is just more my thoughts on the subject. I’m also a little tired and if I’m standing on a soapbox I will gladly step down
I have got to run, but I just thought I would share my thoughts and let anyone that may be interested know that Hypnosis was mentioned on Warehouse 13. Once again, I enjoy the show but please remember that everything you read or watch about hypnosis isn’t true.

It’s funny how TV always get our profession obscured. Luckily i find that in Denamrk weher I live there is a lot of positive publicity on hypnosis in these years. A lot of the studys from neuroscince start spill through in to the general public opinion which i great. But every time you see Hypnosis in a TV-show you can be 90% sure that it is 90% BS…
